{"id":779798,"date":"2025-03-21T09:38:29","date_gmt":"2025-03-21T09:38:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/?p=779798"},"modified":"2025-03-24T08:25:12","modified_gmt":"2025-03-24T08:25:12","slug":"practice-blames-pii-costs-after-going-under-owing-740k","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/practice-blames-pii-costs-after-going-under-owing-740k","title":{"rendered":"Practice blames PII costs after going under owing \u00a3740k"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MHA Architects, the trading name for Michael Hyde &amp; Associates, which has offices in Sheffield and Manchester, appointed liquidators Cowgills this month.<\/p>\n<p>Founded in 1974, the practice is best known for the Stockport Pyramid, which was completed in 1992 to the designs of the firm\u2019s Christopher Denny, and for its mid-90s revamp and extension of Owen Williams\u2019 Futurist Art Deco Daily Express Building in Manchester.<\/p>\n<p>Explaining the circumstances which led to the company\u2019s closure, director Jimmy Lennon told the AJ: \u2018The principal cause [of the liquidation] was the cost of maintaining Professional Indemnity Insurance (PII) cover since 2020, given the market in the wake of the Grenfell Tower tragedy.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018This eroded cash reserves, leaving the company vulnerable to cashflow issues in a competitive market struggling to navigate uncertain project timelines.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The recently posted statement of affairs shows the company owes PII providers PIB Insurance Brokers \u00a3106,000, as well as nearly \u00a360,000 to HM Customs and Revenue, \u00a3244,000 to other trade creditors and almost \u00a3262,000 to staff, covering <span class=\"ILfuVd\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"hgKElc\">payments in lieu of notice<\/span><\/span> and redundancy monies.<\/p>\n<p>The \u00a3744,000 deficit also included \u00a397,5oo due to directors for long-term loans to the company.<\/p>\n<p>According to the company\u2019s last accounts for the year ending 31 March 2024, the practice had 15 employees. But the AJ understands there were only nine staff remaining when MHA ceased trading, with numbers already reduced as part of an earlier cost-cutting exercise in late 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Back in 2016 MHA Architects had a workforce of 27 and an annual turnover of nearly \u00a32.4 million.<\/p>\n<p>The company\u2019s website, which has now taken been taken down, said the practice had provided \u2018design services to both private and public sector clients, working on projects ranging in value from \u00a350,000 to \u00a3200 million\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The outfit had previously worked in housing, education, healthcare, scientific research, leisure and commercial development.<\/p>\n<p>In 2019 the company reshuffled its management team following the retirement of long-term directors Harold Morris and Ian Thorp.<\/p>\n<p>The practice was then run by a new board made up of Lennon, Paul Chadwick, Andrew Callicott and Chris Yorke.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_779963\" class=\" wp-caption alignnone\" style=\"max-width: 1010px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-779963\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.rt.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2025\/03\/21094918\/shutterstock_25867282891.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"689\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.rt.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2025\/03\/21094918\/shutterstock_25867282891.webp 1000w, https:\/\/cdn.rt.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2025\/03\/21094918\/shutterstock_25867282891-300x207.webp 300w, https:\/\/cdn.rt.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2025\/03\/21094918\/shutterstock_25867282891-768x529.webp 768w, https:\/\/cdn.rt.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2025\/03\/21094918\/shutterstock_25867282891-160x110.webp 160w, https:\/\/cdn.rt.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2025\/03\/21094918\/shutterstock_25867282891-230x158.webp 230w, https:\/\/cdn.rt.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2025\/03\/21094918\/shutterstock_25867282891-150x103.webp 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Daily Express Building in Manchester which was given an overual by MHA Architects in the mid 90s<\/p>\n\t<p class=\"inline_image_source\" style=\"max-width: 1010px;\">Source:Shutterstock\/Raymond Orton<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The news of MHA Architects\u2019 demise comes as the RIBA\u2019s Future Trends survey for February revealed that architects expect their workloads to increase over the next three months, signalling a return to optimism after three months of pessimism.<\/p>\n<p>The most positive outlooks, according to the survey, are in the housing and commercial sectors, with confidence in residential schemes the highest since mid-2022.<\/p>\n<p>The institute\u2019s monthly bellwether of the profession\u2019s ongoing workloads showed that London stood out as the most positive region.<\/p>\n<p>However, Adrian Malleson<strong>,<\/strong> the RIBA\u2019s head of economic research and analysis, said: \u2018[Despite] this increased optimism, significant risks to future growth remain.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018These include heightened geopolitical uncertainty and growing threats to global supply chains due to protectionist trade policies. Commentary received from practices in February gives a mixed picture.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Practices report difficulty gaining sufficient work of sufficient value<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u2018Many describe a challenging market, hindered by client hesitancy, raised interest rates, planning delays, strong fee competition, an increased regulatory burden and upcoming increases in Stamp Duty and employers\u2019 NICs.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u2018In such a market, some practices report difficulty gaining sufficient work of sufficient value to maintain current staffing levels and ensure practice viability.
