{"id":779488,"date":"2025-03-20T10:15:44","date_gmt":"2025-03-20T10:15:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/?p=779488"},"modified":"2025-03-20T10:57:51","modified_gmt":"2025-03-20T10:57:51","slug":"riba-to-move-to-temporary-home-at-royal-college-of-physicians","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/riba-to-move-to-temporary-home-at-royal-college-of-physicians","title":{"rendered":"RIBA to move to temporary home at Royal College of Physicians"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In an announcement made as plans were submitted for its \u00a358 million House of Architecture revamp, the RIBA said it will move into the Jerwood Centre, a \u2018self contained\u2019 neo-Georgian building d<span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">esigned by Carden &amp; Godfrey Architects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">The 23-year-old building sits just south of the main Royal College of Physicians (RCP) building designed by Denys Lasdun, a former RIBA president, former Royal Gold Medal winner and National Theatre architect.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As part of the agreement between the RIBA and the RCP, the RIBA will make use of the main RCP building\u2019s services as well as holding the inauguration of upcoming president Chris Williamson there in September, plus other events.<\/p>\n<p>The Jerwood Centre, which opened in 2002 as home to the RCP\u2019s education department, is located 60m south of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/practice\/culture\/exhibition-of-lasduns-work-opens-at-royal-college-of-physicians\">61-year-old Lasdun building<\/a>, which opened in 1964.<\/p>\n<p>Jack Pringle, the RIBA\u2019s chair of board, said: \u2018To have secured the self-contained Jerwood Centre and use of the iconic Sir Denys Lasdun-designed RCP building in one of London\u2019s most beautiful parks is exceptional.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018This ensures we can continue to deliver for members and provide an excellent temporary base for our teams only a few minutes\u2019 walk from Portland Place.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: 0;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!4v1742388558093!6m8!1m7!1sz4LSDX_Ec5zKM4mP7Ck_kA!2m2!1d51.52491574135203!2d-0.1447293095309643!3f343.2931078613531!4f2.6297223987536427!5f0.7820865974627469\" width=\"100%\" height=\"450\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The RCP agreement comes after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/benedetti-submits-58-8-million-riba-house-of-architecture-scheme\">submission of the planning application<\/a> for the Bendetti-designed overhaul of 66 Portland Place at the end of last month, as the AJ reported yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>The retrofit and refurbishment of the central London building is part of a wider \u00a385 million investment in the RIBA\u2019s headquarters, collections and technology. However, the RIBA has not yet provided an update on plans for an off-site collections facility away from 66 Portland Place.<\/p>\n<p><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">The RIBA\u2019s library and collections access services are due to close on 10 April ahead of a full decant<\/span> from its 66 Portland Place headquarters at the end of August. The institution is due to close its doors to visitors from the end of May.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, some of the four million items in the RIBA\u2019s collection will be accessible <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/city-of-london-to-host-riba-collection-during-house-of-architecture-works\">at the London Archives<\/a> in the Square Mile, as part of a deal with the City of London.<\/p>\n<p>RIBA chief executive officer Valerie Vaughan-Dick said the RIBA had considered other locations but that the move to the RCP would \u2018ensure as little disruption as possible to our services for members, as well as staff, and those wanting to learn about the transformative power of architecture\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>She added: \u2018Having made enquiries with several membership bodies, royal colleges and cultural institutions, I\u2019m positive we\u2019ve secured a fantastic temporary home at the Jerwood Centre for our staff and invited guests in this agreement with the Royal College of Physicians.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Vaughan-Dick said yesterday that submission of the Benedetti scheme represented \u2018the next step in our House of Architecture transformative programme that will focus on RIBA\u2019s architectural collections, upgrades to digital technology and sensitive, essential refurbishment and restoration of 66 Portland Place in London to make it more accessible, functional, sustainable and welcoming.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Support has been clear for the scheme and our overall House of Architecture ambitions. Feedback from our consultations has been supportive of the proposed internal improvements and external aspects and has seen us take into consideration some adjustments from the original proposals.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Catherine Powell, interim chief executive at the Royal College of Physicians, said:<i> \u2018<\/i>We are pleased to partner with the Royal Institute of British Architects by welcoming them to the Jerwood Centre during the refurbishment of their headquarters.
