{"id":779130,"date":"2025-03-17T11:19:54","date_gmt":"2025-03-17T11:19:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/?p=779130"},"modified":"2025-03-17T11:19:54","modified_gmt":"2025-03-17T11:19:54","slug":"janet-courtney-hostel-lerwick","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/competitions\/janet-courtney-hostel-lerwick","title":{"rendered":"Janet Courtney Hostel, Lerwick"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The winning team will refurbish the Category A-listed Janet Courtney Hostel and convert the 1939 former student accommodation block into new affordable housing<\/p>\n<p>The complex is one of four buildings \u2013 along with a church, institute and another hostel \u2013 that remain on the site of the former old Anderson High School following its relocation to nearby Clickimin.<\/p>\n<p>Edinburgh-based 7N Architects has drawn up a masterplan for the site which is located on the Knab peninsula in Lerwick on the southern fringes of the island\u2019s largest settlement.<\/p>\n<p>According to the brief: \u2018Up until 2017, the Janet Courtney Hostel was used as student accommodation for pupils from outlying areas in Shetland.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018However, following the relocation of the school and the provision of new student accommodation, the building has remained unoccupied, falling into a state of disrepair.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018This project is for the conversion \/ refurbishment of the existing Janet Courtney Hostel into a combination of one, two and three beds flats for use as affordable housing by Shetland Islands Council.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Early option appraisals indicate that it may be possible to accommodate up to 19 flats, although this will be dictated by further detailed design, space standards and current levels of demand in the area.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Lerwick \u2013 which means \u2018bay of clay\u2019 in Old Norse <em>\u2013<\/em> is the main port for the Shetland Islands and currently has a population of around 7,500.<\/p>\n<p>The latest procurement comes almost three years after Kevin Kelly Architects won a competition for a \u00a35,000 \u2018beacon\u2019 installation on Foula in the Shetlands.<\/p>\n<p>Bidders must have an average annual turnover of at least \u00a354,000.
