Nailed to my living room wall is a piece of paper that\u2019s bigger than the door it\u2019s next to.<\/p>\n

The last large drawing I whittled away at lived in the middle of the floor for over a year; now there\u2019s a one-year-old in the house this drawing has fled to the safety of higher ground.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m in pursuit of ways to introduce primal architecture back into the contemporary city. My current obsession is finding ways to slot pure courtyard forms into the blandness of an urban high-rise, generally via the medium of large-scale, dream-like, two-point perspectives.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s the content. The drawing style also aims for the primal, where I overlay loose ink wash onto a clinical pencil drawing, the ambition being that the pencil shows how the space looks, while the ink shows how the space feels.<\/p>\n

The emotive is undervalued in our pragmatic profession. This is a mistake, as wellbeing thrives in spaces with feeling.<\/p>\n

The drawings I\u2019ve selected here aim to show that this pursuit of the primal isn\u2019t just reserved for the final showstopper \u2013 ink flourishes can enrich every section, plan, detail, precedent study, development sketch and concept scribble.<\/p>\n
