{"id":778542,"date":"2025-03-13T10:54:20","date_gmt":"2025-03-13T10:54:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/?p=778542"},"modified":"2025-03-14T08:53:11","modified_gmt":"2025-03-14T08:53:11","slug":"major-practices-make-redundancies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/major-practices-make-redundancies","title":{"rendered":"Major practices make redundancies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>London-based Squire &amp; Partners, which recently went through a \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wallpaper.com\/architecture\/squire-and-partners-restructure-london-uk\">radical restructure<\/a>\u2019, is understood to have made around a dozen staff members redundant.<\/p>\n<p>According to its last annual accounts posted on Companies House (for the year ending 31 July 2023), the practice had already seen some recent contraction, reducing its headcount from 126 in 2022 to 87 in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Turnover in the same period dropped from \u00a318.2 million to \u00a314.8 million.<\/p>\n<p><span data-huuid=\"359270836848701438\">The practice,\u00a0<\/span><span data-huuid=\"359270836848701438\">founded in 1976 as Michael Squire Associates, was once the UK&#8217;s ninth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/aj100\/firm\/squire-partners\">biggest practice<\/a>. Since <\/span><span data-huuid=\"359270836848701438\">2017 it has been based in a revamped Grade II-listed building in Brixton known as The Department Store. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Squire &amp; Partners declined to comment on the latest job losses.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, AJ100 practice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/aj100\/firm\/hyphen\">Hyphen Architects<\/a>, which was ranked 51st in the 2024 league table of the nation\u2019s largest employers of architects, confirmed to the AJ that it was going through a consultation programme over proposed job losses.<\/p>\n<p>The 120-strong company said it was too early to estimate how many redundancies it would be making.<\/p>\n<p>The \u00a315 million turnover practice, which has 10 offices around the globe and is a specialist in designing data centres, has seen significant growth in recent years, first entering the AJ100 in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>A practice spokesperson said that \u2018clients slowing their decision-making has recently started to affect Hyphen\u2019s UK business\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Last year the AJ reported that several major architects had got rid of staff in order to balance their books as uncertainty slowed down construction and stalled progress on existing projects.<\/p>\n<p>The RIBA\u2019s Future Trends surveys in 2025 have not, so far, painted a much brighter picture. Data collected from its bellwether practices in January pointed to a \u2018weak architectural market, with continued reports of intense fee competition, a lack of new enquiries, and insufficient work in the pipeline\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The institute\u2019s report had also warned that some firms were \u2018considering redundancies\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>RIBA head of economic research and analysis Adrian Malleson said last month: \u2018In the context of an under-performing economy and global uncertainty, the architects\u2019 market remains challenging. The profession remains pessimistic about future work.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018For the third consecutive month, the RIBA Future Workload Index is negative, indicating that practices continue to anticipate workloads falling in the near term. Most sectors and regions anticipate falling workloads.
