The project, for Liverpool City Council, would improve pedestrian access between Upper Pitt Street, Nelson Street and Great George\u2019s Square. It would also create a new children’s play area and a commemorative memorial garden.<\/p>\n
At the centre of the scheme will be two stone lions which formerly sat outside the Chinese consulate in Manchester. Near the lions would sit a red maple \u2018wishing tree\u2019 and \u2018flower mat\u2019.<\/p>\n
Liverpool City Council’s cabinet member for economy and growth Nick Small said the consultation would help \u2018create something that is really special\u2019.<\/p>\n
He added: \u2018We are hugely proud of the city\u2019s Chinatown, which is the oldest in Europe and has huge potential. We want to revitalise it so it is somewhere that the local community and Liverpool residents are equally proud of, as well as being somewhere tourists can spend time.\u2019<\/p>\n
Great George’s Square is part of a number of ongoing projects in the Baltic Triangle area of Liverpool, including \u00a396 million proposals for a new Baltic Station<\/a>, designed by Liverpool-based practice\u00a0 Owen Ellis Architects<\/a> and engineer Mott Macdonald.<\/a>\u00a0The station is due to open in 2027, subject to planning.<\/p>\n Completion of the Great George\u2019s Square scheme is expected in early 2026, subject to planning.<\/p>\n Current site view<\/strong>
