Hawkins\\Brown and Belfast-based RPP are in the running for their collaboration on One Elmwood<\/a>, an adaptable event space for Queen’s University Belfast, hosting ‘anything from concerts to careers fairs’.<\/p>\n

London-based TODD Architects has been shortlisted for another Queen\u2019s project: a \u00a317.5 million business school<\/a> in the university\u2019s south Belfast campus.<\/p>\n

And Belfast practice McGonigle McGrath \u2013 which was shortlisted twice for one-off houses in 2023<\/a>, and went on to win the RSUA\u2019s top honour<\/a> for best building \u2013 is once again in the running for its \u2018consolidation\u2019 of two terraced houses<\/a> overlooking Belfast Lough.<\/p>\n

McGurk Architects, which previously won best building in Northern Ireland 2022<\/a>, has two projects in this year\u2019s shortlist: a community heritage centre<\/a> in west Belfast, and an arts and culture centre<\/a> in Londonderry.<\/p>\n

The other shortlisted projects are\u00a0a timber-clad passive house<\/a> in Hillsborough, Country Down, by Marshall McCann Architects, and an extension to a listed Victorian Public baths<\/a> in Belfast by McAdam Design and Consarc Design Group.<\/p>\n

Last year’s project named Northern Ireland building of the year was the 75,000m2<\/sup>\u00a0Ulster University Belfast Campus<\/a>, designed by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios with McAdam Design, Scott Tallon Walker and White Ink Architects.<\/p>\n

To be considered for an RSUA design award, projects have to be in use for at least one year. The RSUA says this allows its judging panel to assess the \u2018sustainability and real-world performance [of the buildings] more effectively\u2019, ensuring its awards remain a \u2018rigorous benchmark\u2019 for design.<\/p>\n

Ciar\u00e1n Fox, director of RSUA, said this year\u2019s shortlist of projects \u2018is a wonderful blend of the old and the new … each demonstrating elements of delight, invention, or ambition deserving of further examination\u2019.<\/p>\n

He added: \u2018It\u2019s great to see innovative architecture breathing life into existing structures. It\u2019s one of the most sustainable moves a client can make. We also have a couple of new builds which are excellent examples of successfully delivering the low-carbon agenda in a beautiful way.\u2019<\/p>\n

All the shortlisted schemes for this year\u2019s RSUA awards will now be visited by a judging panel with the winners announced in early May.<\/p>\n

Projects that win an RSUA Design Award will be in the running to win the Liam McCormick Prize \u2013 Northern Ireland\u2019s building of the year \u2013 and will be considered for a UK-wide RIBA National Award in recognition of their architectural excellence.<\/p>\n

The shortlist for the RIBA Stirling Prize will then be drawn from the National Award-winning projects, and the Stirling Prize winner will be announced in October.<\/p>\n
