The team selected for the estimated \u00a31.9 million contract will explore a range of design solutions looking at options to refurbishment, reconfiguration and potentially extend the Grade A-listed landmark located in the centre of the historic city.<\/p>\n

The estimated \u00a318.1 million project will transform the nineteenth century 2,968m\u00b2 complex into a new modern and fit for purpose judicial facility featuring between four and six courtrooms. Key aims include improving the building\u2019s resilience, efficiency, effectiveness and sustainability.<\/p>\n

According to the brief: \u2018Bishop Street Courthouse is a Grade A listed building situated within the Historic City Conservation Area of Derry \/ Londonderry, Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n

\u2018The existing facilities are poorly configured, poorly segregated, lack flexibility and technological capability, are at physical capacity, do not meet the demands of users and its mechanical and electrical infrastructure is at end of life, representing a critical service delivery risk within a building of vital operational importance.<\/p>\n

\u2018The purpose of this project is to resolve the issues with the existing facilities and increase the capacity of the courthouse by refurbishing, reconfiguring and potentially extending the Bishop Street Courthouse.\u2019<\/p>\n

Derry is Northern Ireland\u2019s second largest city, with 85,000 inhabitants. In April 2019, Hamilton Architects was selected to design a landmark \u00a31.1 million visitor information centre<\/a> inside a former Ulster Bank premises in Waterloo Place overlooking the city\u2019s historic walls.<\/p>\n

The latest procurement comes four years after Derry City and Strabane District Council launched a search for a masterplanner for a \u00a365 million revamp<\/a> of its central riverfront and walled city.<\/p>\n

Bishop Street Courthouse was first constructed in 1813 before being enlarged throughout the nineteenth century. The building is located within a conservation area immediately next to St Columbs Cathedral, the Bishops Palace and the city walls.<\/p>\n

Derry\u2019s city walls were created in the seventeenth century and measure around 1.5km in circumference. The settlement is the only walled city in Ireland and is thought to be one of the most significant survival examples of the typology in Europe.<\/p>\n

The latest project is located a short distance from Wilkinson Eyre\u2019s 2011 Peace Bridge connecting the east and west banks of the River Foyle. Todd Architects was selected for a new \u00a38 million maritime museum and archive nearby<\/a> in 2015.<\/p>\n

Bids to deliver the contract will be evaluated 60 per cent on quality and 40 per cent on cost. Applicants must hold employer\u2019s liability insurance of \u00a310 million, public liability insurance of \u00a310 million and professional indemnity insurance of \u00a35 million.<\/p>\n
