{"id":776826,"date":"2025-03-03T09:53:51","date_gmt":"2025-03-03T09:53:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/?p=776826"},"modified":"2025-03-13T11:01:07","modified_gmt":"2025-03-13T11:01:07","slug":"four-uk-architects-named-on-2025-mj-long-prize-shortlist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/four-uk-architects-named-on-2025-mj-long-prize-shortlist","title":{"rendered":"MJ Long Prize: four \u2018exceptional practitioners\u2019 shortlisted for 2025 award"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"related_article_inside\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/anne-lacaton-named-as-recipient-of-jane-drew-prize\" target=\"_blank\"><img src=\"https:\/\/cdn.rt.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2025\/03\/03085044\/ann-lacaton-with-dunkirk-scaled.webp\" \/><\/a><div class=\"text_section\"><p>More on this topic<\/p><h4><a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/anne-lacaton-named-as-recipient-of-jane-drew-prize\" target=\"_blank\">Anne Lacaton awarded 2025 Jane Drew Prize for Architecture<\/a><\/h4><\/div><\/div>\n<p>The finalists for this year\u2019s MJ Long Prize are: Mathilda Lewis of dMFK Architects; Rebecca Kalbfell of HAT Projects; Jacqueline Stephen of N\u00edall McLaughlin Architects; and Rachel Elliott of Lynch Architects.<\/p>\n<p>This prize, named in memory of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/inspirational-british-library-architect-mj-long-dies-aged-79\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">inspirational architect MJ Long<\/a>, and now in its sixth year, celebrates architects who are excelling in practice.<\/p>\n<p>The prize is open to UK-based architects working for practices based in this country and judged on an overall body of work with an emphasis on a recently completed project.<\/p>\n<p>Lewis has been nominated for her role as project architect on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/buildings\/dmfk-revamps-charles-voyseys-only-commercial-building\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Voysey House<\/a> in Chiswick; Kalbfell for her work leading the design and delivery of Sunspot in Jaywick Sands in Essex; Stephen for leading on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/niall-mclaughlins-faith-museum-wins-2024-building-beauty-awards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Faith Museum<\/a> in Bishop Auckland; and Elliott for her role leading the project for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/buildings\/secular-and-scared-westminster-coroners-court-by-lynch-architects\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Westminster Coroner\u2019s Court<\/a> in London.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/mj-long-prize-2024-awarded-to-t-sa-associate-director-jennifer-frewen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Last year\u2019s prize<\/a> was awarded to <span class=\"s1\">Jennifer Frewen of Takero Shimazaki Architects<\/span> for her work on <span class=\"s1\">global headquarters of<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">Royal Academy of Dance in London.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>AJ architecture editor Rob Wilson said: \u2018The command and skill in the practice of architecture displayed by these four shortlisted practitioners is exceptional.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The projects for which they have been nominated exhibit an excellence in design and delivery \u2013 from sensitivity to context and community engagement, to skill in detailing and innovative use of materials \u2013 which exemplifies what the prize was set up to recognise.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the architects in the running for this year\u2019s global Moira Gemmill Prize for Emerging Architecture are based in South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Colombia and Ecuador. Each seeks original and tactical ways to navigate the contexts they work in to create spaces for the local community. The award recognises a bright future for designers under the age of 45 who are leading their own practices.<\/p>\n<p>The shortlist comprises: Marialuisa Borja of Al Borde based in Ecuador, Ana Maria Guti\u00e9rrez of Organizmo based in Colombia, Ashleigh Killa of The MAAK based in South Africa, Sara Alissa and Nojoud Alsudairi of Syn Architects based in Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n<p>Last year&#8217;s prize was awarded to Nguy\u1ec5n H\u00e0 of ARB Architects, based in Vietnam, for a body of work that included projects such as the \u0110\u1ea1o M\u1eabu Museum and Temple.<\/p>\n<p>Judging the Moira Gemmill and MJ Long Prizes are: Cristina Monteiro of DK-CM; Sandra Barclay of Barclay Crousse; Eva\u202fJi\u0159i\u010dn\u00e1 of AI Design; Anna Liu of Tonkin Liu; Albert\u202fWilliamson\u2011Taylor of AKT II; Karen Livingstone of the Fitzwilliam Museum and Sal Wilson, educator and sustainability consultant.<\/p>\n<p>Both prizes form part of the AJ and AR\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/w-awards-and-programme\">W Awards<\/a>, which celebrate exemplary work of all kinds, from the design of the world\u2019s most significant new buildings to contributions to wider architectural culture, from lifetimes of achievement to the work of women with bright futures ahead.<\/p>\n<p><span data-teams=\"true\">We are delighted that this year\u2019s\u00a0<a id=\"menurlf\" class=\"fui-Link ___1q1shib f2hkw1w f3rmtva f1ewtqcl fyind8e f1k6fduh f1w7gpdv fk6fouc fjoy568 figsok6 f1s184ao f1mk8lai fnbmjn9 f1o700av f13mvf36 f1cmlufx f9n3di6 f1ids18y f1tx3yz7 f1deo86v f1eh06m1 f1iescvh fhgqx19 f1olyrje f1p93eir f1nev41a f1h8hb77 f1lqvz6u f10aw75t fsle3fq f17ae5zn\" title=\"http:\/\/www.architectural-review.com\/w-awards\" href=\"http:\/\/www.architectural-review.com\/w-awards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Link W Awards\">W Awards<\/a> will be hosted by ECC Italy in Venice on Friday 9 May, where the winners of the MJ Long and Moira Gemmill Prizes will be revealed.
