RIBA announced its shortlist of nine projects for the region today (27 February). They include the refurbishment of two Brutalist buildings at Coventry University<\/a> by BDP, and the transformation of a 1960s Brutalist medical building for the University of Worcester<\/a> by Glancy Nicholls Architects.<\/p>\n

Also making the cut is OMI Architects with the alteration and extension of a \u2018monastery in the city\u2019<\/a> in Birmingham, the contemporary enhancement of the National Trust\u2019s Grade-I listed Hanbury Hall<\/a> by Howells, and a new on-campus nursery for the University of Staffordshire<\/a> by FCBS.<\/p>\n

Invisible House, an intriguing all-mirrored home by BPN Architects, is also among the shortlisted projects.<\/p>\n

In last year\u2019s West Midlands regional awards,<\/a> FCBS emerged as the big winner,<\/a> picking up four special prizes for its overhaul of the world\u2019s first iron-framed building in Shrewsbury, the Flaxmill Maltings. Overall, five of the 12-strong shortlist garnered awards.<\/p>\n

RIBA West Midlands jury chair Tim Collett, associate professor in architecture at the University of Nottingham, said this year\u2019s shortlist includes \u2018nine exciting buildings that offer a wonderful range of typologies and scales from large academic and commercial buildings to homes, a nursery and a pavilion\u2019.<\/p>\n

Collett added: \u2018It is heart-warming to see so much transformation and imaginative reuse, and sustainability targets surpassed.\u2019<\/p>\n

All projects shortlisted for RIBA regional awards will be visited by a jury, with the winners announced later this spring.<\/p>\n

The winners will then be considered for several RIBA Special Awards, including the RIBA Sustainability Award and RIBA Building of the Year, before being considered for a highly coveted RIBA National Award, to be announced in the summer.<\/p>\n

The shortlist for the RIBA Stirling Prize \u2013 the UK\u2019s best new building \u2013 will be drawn from the RIBA National Award-winning projects and announced in September.<\/p>\n

The Stirling Prize winner will be announced in October.<\/p>\n
