{"id":776182,"date":"2025-02-24T12:23:34","date_gmt":"2025-02-24T12:23:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/?p=776182"},"modified":"2025-02-25T09:16:22","modified_gmt":"2025-02-25T09:16:22","slug":"british-museum-framework-2025-29","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/competitions\/british-museum-framework-2025-29","title":{"rendered":"British Museum framework 2025-29"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Teams selected for the 2025-29 agreement will have the opportunity to work on a range of technical studies, light-touch refurbishments, complex standalone renewals, the refurbishment and creation of new galleries and the re-masterplanning of existing spaces within the <a href=\"https:\/\/historicengland.org.uk\/listing\/the-list\/list-entry\/1130404\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">landmark Grade I-listed Bloomsbury complex,<\/a> which boasts around 3,500 rooms.<\/p>\n<p>The framework is divided into seven lots, covering project management; quantity surveying; mechanical, electrical, public health and fire engineering; architecture and interior design; structural and civil engineering; fire safety; and surveying. Up to \u00a311.5 million is expected to be spent on architectural services during the framework\u2019s four-year period.<\/p>\n<p>The framework launch comes just a week after Lina Ghotmeh was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/british-museum-lina-ghotmeh-winstition-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">named winner of the British Museum\u2019s high-profile Western Range renewal competition<\/a>. Studio Weave\u00a0with Wright &amp; Wright Architects, Webb Yates Engineers, Tom Massey Studio and Daisy Froud <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/british-museum-names-winner-in-entrances-contest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">won a separate contest to renew the museum\u2019s north and south entrances<\/a> in December.<\/p>\n<p>According to the brief: \u2018The British Museum is seeking professional, highly skilled and experienced suppliers who are willing and able to work across a full range of projects in terms of complexity and value to ensure that the framework provides a reliable and efficient source of expertise and delivers value for money.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The types of projects and related planning and design activity likely to be delivered under the framework are broad and [cover] both front-of-house and back-of-house spaces.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Originally founded in 1753 to document human history, art and culture, the British Museum is based inside a large Robert Smirke-designed complex constructed during the early to mid-19th century.<\/p>\n<p>The 100,000m<sup>2 <\/sup>museum features more than eight million items in its permanent collection, many of which were sourced during the era of the British Empire. Stanton Williams completed a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/story.aspx?storyCode=10036307\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Albukhary Foundation Gallery of the Islamic World<\/a> at the British Museum six years ago.<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, the museum\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/buildings\/riba-stirling-prize-british-museum-wcec-by-rogers-stirk-harbour-partners\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Conservation and Exhibitions Centre<\/a> extension by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners was shortlisted for the RIBA Stirling Prize. In 2003 Foster + Partners\u2019 transformation of the museum\u2019s Great Court was also among the contenders for Britain\u2019s top architecture prize.<\/p>\n<p>The latest procurement comes four years after the museum <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/british-museum-names-architects-on-new-45m-framework\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">named four architects on its previous \u00a345 million construction consultancy services framework<\/a>: Avanti Architects, Dannatt Johnson Architects, Nex Architecture and Wright &amp; Wright Architects.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/british-museum-lina-ghotmeh-winstition-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ghotmeh\u2019s overhaul of the museum\u2019s Western Range<\/a> will involve the upgrade of more than a third of its gallery spaces and behind-the-scenes areas. The Western Range job will be the museum\u2019s biggest building project since the 1820s, when work began on Robert Smirke\u2019s original Greek Revival-style quadrangle.<\/p>\n<p>Bids for inclusion on the latest framework will be evaluated 70 per cent on quality and 30 per cent on price.
