The proposal consists of a new distillery, visitor centre and warehouse on the Black Isle, just north of Inverness in the Scottish Highlands.<\/p>\n

The proposed scheme will bring distilling back to Mulchaich Farm in the Ferintosh district, a \u2018once legendary\u2019 whisky producing region in the 18th century, according to Organic Architects.<\/p>\n

Bari Reid, director at Organic Architects, said research carried out by the practice during the planning application process had \u2018proven that there was distillation on the site\u2019.<\/p>\n

He went on: \u2018Local tradition and archaeological evidence suggests that the ruins at Mulchaich Farm are the remains of one of the original Ferintosh distilleries.<\/p>\n

\u2018Today nothing remains of this lost distillation region, which was once Scotland\u2019s biggest whisky producer and the site is used for grazing sheep as part of the farmland at Mulchaich. The history of the site is the very reason for this proposal coming about.\u2019<\/p>\n

Organic Architects has submitted a planning application to the Highland Council for the project.<\/p>\n

According to the practice, Ferintosh whisky enjoyed a booming trade in the 1700s as a result of a unique tax break granted to the landowner by the King, William of Orange, but the area\u2019s whisky industry collapsed after the privilege was withdrawn in 1786.<\/p>\n

Susan Brook, director at heritage consultancy Buildings Archaeology, said the privilege was withdrawn following \u2018an outcry [by other] Lowland distillers against the flood of whisky produced in Ferintosh\u2019, after the largest distillery constructed on the site in the 1780s produced more than 5,000 gallons of the spirit in six months.<\/p>\n

Subject to planning application approval, the distillery is set to create up to thirty skilled jobs, according to Organic Architects.<\/p>\n

Organic Architects was founded in 2009 and is based in Helensburgh, on the west coast of Scotland.<\/p>\n

It is led by architect and distillery construction specialist Bari Reid, and former National Trust conservation architect, Andrea Wise.<\/p>\n
