{"id":772430,"date":"2025-01-29T07:04:28","date_gmt":"2025-01-29T07:04:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/?p=772430"},"modified":"2025-01-29T11:09:31","modified_gmt":"2025-01-29T11:09:31","slug":"charles-holland-wins-mitcham-bandstand-contest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/charles-holland-wins-mitcham-bandstand-contest","title":{"rendered":"Charles Holland wins Mitcham bandstand contest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The winning multidisciplinary team will now work with local people to co-design and then deliver a new temporary and re-usable bandstand for Mitcham Town Centre that will be used from July to September for the next three years.<\/p>\n<p>Charles Holland Architects \u2013 working with fabricator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.raskl.co.uk\/team\">Raskl<\/a> \u2013 was chosen ahead of an undisclosed shortlist of rival teams to win the commission.<\/p>\n<p>The project aims to boost footfall by drawing on the history of an earlier bandstand that was constructed in the 1920s on the Fair Green in Mitcham Town Centre but was removed in the mid-20th century.<\/p>\n<p>The completed bandstand will be called \u2018What Goes Around\u2019, a reference to its use of recycled materials as well as the return of a bandstand to the area after 100 years.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy leader, councillor and cabinet member for civic pride and climate change Eleanor Stringer said: \u2018The new bandstand will be a celebration of Mitcham\u2019s history and heritage as well as its future.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Mitcham\u2019s community is so proud of this area and wants to see improvements made. The new bandstand will be at the heart of Fair Green, and is one of many ways we are revitalising the area \u2013 bringing it to life for everyone who lives, works and visits here.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We\u2019re delighted to be working with Charles Holland Architects, who will reach out to the community to involve them in this exciting project.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Mitcham is located around 11.6km south-west of Charing Cross. Local landmarks include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/archive\/merton-sea-cadet-corps-hall-mitcham-london-by-godsmark-architecture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Godsmark Architecture\u2019s Merton Sea Cadet Corps Hall<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/okrastudio.com\/project\/pollards-hill-space-public-realm.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pollards Pop-Up By Okra Studio<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/competitions\/design-team-sought-for-4m-mitcham-park-overhaul\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mitcham Cricket Green<\/a> which is thought to be one of the oldest cricket greens in the world.<\/p>\n<p>The latest project aims to deliver a new \u2018bold and striking\u2019 temporary bandstand structure on Fair Green in the centre of Mitcham.
