{"id":771080,"date":"2025-01-24T08:56:24","date_gmt":"2025-01-24T08:56:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/?p=771080"},"modified":"2025-01-27T09:06:02","modified_gmt":"2025-01-27T09:06:02","slug":"how-a-social-housing-scheme-pioneered-3d-printing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/how-a-social-housing-scheme-pioneered-3d-printing","title":{"rendered":"How a social housing scheme pioneered 3D printing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"s2\">Dublin and Manchester-based Harcourt Architects has completed a council housing scheme in Dundalk, Ireland, using 3D construction printing \u2013 the first project of its type in the world to meet internationally recognised technical standards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">The system, with its rebar-free, load-bearing double-cavity concrete walls, allows schemes to be built significantly faster than conventional methods.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">The trio of three-bedroomed houses in Grange Close were completed in just 132 days. Developed and delivered with the practice\u2019s emerging sister company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.htl.tech\/\">Harcourt Technologies Ltd<\/a> (HTL), the process shaved at least a third off the time required to construct the 330m\u00b2 project compared with traditional construction methods (estimated at about 200 days).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Using a <a href=\"https:\/\/cobod.com\/\">COBOD<\/a> 3D printer, each layer of concrete takes 18 minutes to \u2018cure\u2019 before the next one can be added. The compressive strength of the walls is understood to be roughly five times stronger than traditional blockwork construction. This greatly reduces the number of deliveries to site, storage required on site and the carbon footprint associated with off-site facilities.
