{"id":770354,"date":"2025-01-15T09:05:46","date_gmt":"2025-01-15T09:05:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/?p=770354"},"modified":"2025-01-16T10:09:32","modified_gmt":"2025-01-16T10:09:32","slug":"assemble-wins-competition-to-upgrade-scottish-highlands-cultural-hub","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/assemble-wins-competition-to-upgrade-scottish-highlands-cultural-hub","title":{"rendered":"Assemble and Office Corr Higgins win competition to upgrade Scottish Highlands cultural hub"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The practices will carry out a feasibility study into how to upgrade and enhance the heritage and art institution which was founded in 1987 in the Scottish Highlands.<\/p>\n<p>They beat five other finalist teams, led by Dualchas Architects, Moxon Architects, Rural Design and Konishi Gaffney Architects.<\/p>\n<p>Key aims of the project include boosting \u2018sustainability, accessibility, and community involvement\u2019 at the 600m\u00b2 waterfront cultural centre which uses arts and heritage to promote political, social, cultural, environmental, and communal change.<\/p>\n<p>The feasibility study is supported by Museums Galleries Scotland and the National Lottery Heritage Fund.<\/p>\n<p>Timespan director and curator Giulla Gregnanin\u00a0said: \u2018Assemble and Office Corr Higgins have been chosen as the perfect partners for Timespan. It is based inside a former herring curing yard overlooking the River Helmsdale.<\/p>\n<p>The feasibility study, due to complete in July, will guide future strategic investment in the building and its displays. The winning team will receive approximately \u00a330,000 to compile a comprehensive report featuring designs and costs up to RIBA Stage 1.<\/p>\n<p>Timespan hopes to deliver a more coherent built presence and better facilities for visitors and staff, with a focus on local materials and character while also reducing the organisation\u2019s environmental impact.<\/p>\n<p>RIAS chief executive Tamsie Thomson said: \u2018At the start of this process we said that Timespan is an organisation that punches above its weight, and we\u2019re delighted to be part of a project that harnesses architecture to allow Timespan to fully realise its potential.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018RIAS Consultancy exists to bring organisations of all shapes and sizes together with great architectural talent, and we\u2019re thrilled to have played a part to support Timespan and its exciting plans for the future.\u2019<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The practices will carry out a feasibility study into how to upgrade and enhance the heritage and art institution which was founded in 1987 in the Scottish Highlands.
