{"id":769530,"date":"2025-01-09T09:55:38","date_gmt":"2025-01-09T09:55:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/?p=769530"},"modified":"2025-01-09T09:58:36","modified_gmt":"2025-01-09T09:58:36","slug":"hawkins-browns-turnover-hits-new-high-but-profits-halve","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/hawkins-browns-turnover-hits-new-high-but-profits-halve","title":{"rendered":"Hawkins\\Brown\u2019s turnover hits new high but profits halve"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Accounts for the period ending 31 March 2024 show that the company\u2019s turnover was \u00a335.3 million \u2013 an all-time high annual income and a 5 per cent increase on the \u00a333.7 million reported last year.<\/p>\n<p>However, profit before tax plummeted from \u00a32.85 million to \u00a31.27 million during the year, with the firm\u2019s expenses rising from \u00a311.5 million to \u00a314.5 million.<\/p>\n<p>During the trading period, the practice absorbed the one-off costs of moving to a new studio in Clerkenwell, and in the spring carried out a round of consultation on job losses.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/wave-of-redundancies-hits-top-architects\">At the time,\u00a0<\/a> a spokesperson for the company, which has been an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/hawkinsbrown-hands-over-ownership-to-its-employees\">Employee Ownership Trust<\/a> since 2021, said that \u2018like many UK architecture practices and professional services firms more widely\u2019 it had seen a number of its projects slowing down or going on hold.<\/p>\n<p>The company\u2019s average workforce in the 12 months until the end of March 2024 was 318.<\/p>\n<p>The practice\u2019s income from overseas work remained steady at around the \u00a32 million mark \u2013 roughly 6 per cent of its overall revenue.<\/p>\n<p>Although the company would not formally comment on the figures, a note with the accounts reads: \u2018The group has continued to grow in terms of turnover throughout the year, the focus being on increasing the customer base.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The directors believe that the principal risks and uncertainties facing the company in the coming year [were a] potential downturn in the construction industry as a result of the ongoing increases in raw material costs and uncertainty surrounding economic growth.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Among the major schemes on Hawkins\\Brown\u2019s books are the redevelopment of the\u00a0 Printworks entertainment venue at Canada Water at Harmsworth Quay, in Rotherhithe, south-east London; and as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/hawkinsbrown-picked-to-lead-next-phase-of-carpenters-estate-regen\">lead designer<\/a> on Phase 2 of the \u00a31 billion Carpenters Estate regeneration scheme, within a masterplan by Metropolitan Workshop and Proctor &amp; Matthews Architects.<\/p>\n<p>In September Hawkins\\Brown won planning for two projects: a \u00a3100 million life sciences masterplan in Cambridge, which will include seven buildings on a 24ha brownfield and former landfill site straddling a railway line south of Cambridge City Airport; and an eight-storey Advanced Research Clusters (ARC) on a vacant 1.13ha grassy site in a 35ha business park, ARC Oxford, formerly known as Oxford Business Park.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Accounts for the period ending 31 March 2024 show that the company\u2019s turnover was \u00a335.3 million \u2013 an all-time high annual income and a 5 per cent increase on the \u00a333.7 million reported last year.
