{"id":769109,"date":"2025-01-03T09:33:22","date_gmt":"2025-01-03T09:33:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/?p=769109"},"modified":"2025-01-03T09:33:22","modified_gmt":"2025-01-03T09:33:22","slug":"zaha-hadid-architects-selected-for-shaoxing-arts-and-culture-centre","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/zaha-hadid-architects-selected-for-shaoxing-arts-and-culture-centre","title":{"rendered":"Zaha Hadid Architects selected for Shaoxing arts and culture centre"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The London-headquartered practice was appointed last month to deliver a vision for the mixed-use <span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">Cao\u2019e River Culture and Art Centre, located on the banks of the Cao\u2019e River.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>ZHA\u2019s design is understood to have been preferred ahead of competition from China-based architects <a href=\"https:\/\/www.9grid.cn\/en\/project\/5\/\">9grid<\/a>, among other unnamed contenders.<\/p>\n<p><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">The winning design includes spaces for <\/span><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">opera, dance, a symphony orchestra, musical theatre and drama productions, with a scheme centred around a 1,400-seat Grand Theatre.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">Other dedicated spaces include a 500-seat black-box multifunctional hall, a 2,900m\u00b2 arts and education centre, a 3,000m\u00b2 conference centre, a 7,500m\u00b2 heritage museum and a 10,000m\u00b2 digital art gallery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Outdoor spaces include <span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\"> terraced landscapes, courtyards, natural parklands and gardens which can host performances while connecting the centre with Shaoxing and giving visitors access to the waterfront.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>ZHA says the shape and form of the building is both \u2018new\u2019 and \u2018recognisable\u2019 and \u2018<span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">honours the rich tradition and craftsmanship of glazed tiles upon pitched roofs within the region\u2019s vernacular architecture\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Regarding its sustainability, the practice says some materials will be locally sourced while the curving roof is designed to provide shading from solar glare and <span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">photovoltaic panels<\/span> will contribute towards the centre\u2019s energy demand.<\/p>\n<p>ZHA\u2019s ongoing China work includes a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/zaha-hadid-architects-reveals-plans-for-curving-skyscraper-in-china\">210m-tall office tower<\/a> in Xi\u2019an, the capital of China\u2019s central Shaanxi Province, a new 409,000m\u00b2 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/zaha-hadid-architects-wins-contest-for-huge-cultural-district-in-chinese-resort\">harbourside cultural district<\/a> in the Chinese beach resort of Sanya and and the proposed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/zha-beats-foster-to-win-huge-sports-project-in-china\">Hangzhou International Sports Centre<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There is no timeline for completion on the <span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">Cao\u2019e River Culture and Art Centre.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The practice has recently been in the news over its legal bid to stop paying for the use of the name of the late Zaha Hadid \u2013 an obligation that has cost the practice \u00a321.4 million since her death.<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-inner\">\n<div class=\"entry\">\n<p>The AJ100 practice\u2019s directors had sought a legal declaration that it should be able to give 12 months\u2019 notice to terminate a contract with the Zaha Hadid Foundation, the charity set up in her name which promotes the late Iraqi-British architect\u2019s work. Under the contract, ZHA must hand over 6 per cent of its income annually to use the trademark \u2018Zaha Hadid\u2019.
