It has been an honour to work alongside the Trampery, Haringey Council and the GLA to refurbish this important heritage asset, on a prominent stretch of townscape in Tottenham, so that it can better serve a diverse range of local entrepreneurs and support their ambitions.

The 639 Community Enterprise Centre has been guided by a sensitive, heritage-led approach that embraces a more expansive understanding of heritage rather than one based on conservation alone. Instead, we’ve looked to embed local histories and more contemporary stories into our design approach so that the building reflects a more communal attitude to significance.

Our deep-dive research into the building’s history from its role as an Edwardian showroom, its use as a council office and its proximity to the 2011 civic unrest embodies a century of community life. As building custodians, it has been our responsibility to tease out these stories and curate them through design touchpoints.

One such approach is through our choice of colour, referencing both Victorian and Edwardian colour theory. As we shift in this era from candlelight and open fires to gas appliances, we also see a shift in colour use, with the introduction of more vibrant and vivid applications. These approaches influenced our uplifts to the space, from interior finishes through to joinery.

This, coupled with the introduction of a herringbone floor to the seminar room, embrace the past whilst delivering contemporary functions on a modest budget, leaving the current building users – like Gina’s café – to help write the next chapter in the building’s history.

For our practice and all key stakeholders, this project demonstrates the importance of our heritage assets and the significance they hold to our local communities, as well as how such approaches can contribute to the Mayor’s High Streets and Town Centres Adaptive Strategies. Together, we have safeguarded the building for future generations whilst offering a dynamic and nurturing space for the local businesses in Tottenham to inhabit and grow.

Tom Bell, director, Freehaus

Stakeholder client’s view

This is an exciting step towards revitalising and safeguarding the 639 Community Enterprise Centre, that will see this Grade II-listed building transformed into an accessible and vibrant hub for local businesses, young entrepreneurs and community activities.
