Located in the lively neighbourhood of Palma de Baixo, near Universidade Cat\u00f3lica, the \u2018Studentville\u2019 scheme\u2019s design draws on elements of its immediate context, echoing the traditional local white houses with their vernacular terracotta channel roof tiles.<\/p>\n

The emerging London-based andre kong studio developed a custom white-enrobed terracotta roof tile for the project, the material also referencing back to the former Viuva Lamego ceramics factory in the neighbourhood.<\/p>\n

The tiles reflect solar heat and create a ventilated fa\u00e7ade, minimise cooling requirements and improving the building\u2019s energy efficiency. Solar panels on the scheme’s south-facing roof provide hot water for the en-suite rooms, while a large underground bicycle parking storage space promotes cycling.<\/p>\n

Offering 52 en-suite rooms, the scheme is envisioned as a collective house for students. The design\u2019s segmented and angled volumes offer a three-dimensional articulation that maximises light intake and optimises room layout on the awkward site.<\/p>\n

Each room features a private balcony, shower room, storage and double bed, with access to shared communal spaces such as a gym, games room, leisure terraces and swimming pool. A double-height kitchen and living area with tiered seating acts as a social anchor to the scheme.<\/p>\n

The interior design incorporates custom birch plywood built-in furniture, including a reception desk shaped to mirror the building\u2019s stepping volumes. Each room number is lit from a wall-mounted roof tile, referencing the project\u2019s exterior within.<\/p>\n

The project was developed in collaboration with \u00d4CO as the local site architect.<\/p>\n
