Hopkins Architects\u2019 new \u2018SciTech\u2019 buildings for Haileybury private school in Hertford double the school\u2019s previous provision and provide a new model for teaching science.<\/p>\n

Together, the buildings provide science laboratories, IT suites, robotics amenities and design and technology (DT) facilities as well as a dedicated research centre, 20 teaching and seminar spaces, a geodome, VR Room, media room and outdoor courtyard.<\/p>\n

Hopkins\u2019 competition-winning design integrates the new cross-laminated timber (CLT) and glulam-framed structures with the existing buildings around a central courtyard and cloister. In particular, the school\u2019s 1934 Grade II-listed Herbert Baker building has been opened up at the rear to create an axis with this cloister.<\/p>\n

The project consists of a new teaching building \u2013 a three-storey high linear block \u2013 containing biology and computational laboratories and which sits in line with one of the wings of the Baker building. Within it, classrooms are located at each end allowing for windows on three sides to maximise daylight and views. The fourth side of the courtyard, meanwhile, is formed by a two-storey top-lit research block with butterfly rooflight.<\/p>\n

While the cross-laminated timber (CLT) structure has been estimated to reduce the development\u2019s embodied carbon per square metre by up to 56 per cent compared with conventional structural methods, operational energy is also minimised through ground-source heat pumps. The new blocks also feature green roofs, good daylight provision to all spaces, and natural ventilation, which is supplemented in the laboratories by mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR).<\/p>\n

SciTech will also be accessible to a wider cohort of students through the school\u2019s partnership with Haileybury Turnford secondary school in Hertford.<\/p>\n

Architect\u2019s view<\/h3>\n

Historically schools have tended to divide up subjects into separate accommodation to encourage specialisation. This project breaks down those barriers by linking existing buildings with new architectural elements to form a single science and technology department. Not only will it provide first-class facilities in all disciplines, it will also encourage cross-fertilisation across practical and academic subjects. I think it is a very stimulating and inspirational model and wish I had been taught like that!
