The clients had a dual passion for music and cooking, driving the concept for this home renovation, which creates an entertaining space at the heart of the house.<\/p>\n

The music room sits off the kitchen and is home to an extensive record collection. taking up 40m of shelf space. Dividing screens enable the space to be opened up when hosting, or sealed off for a more intimate listening experience.<\/p>\n

The home\u2019s internal material palette focuses on natural materials with oak cabinet fronts, terracotta flooring, terrazzo worktops and cognac leather banquettes.<\/p>\n

Cork has been used to line the shelves of vinyl records, which is both aesthetically pleasing and improves the room\u2019s acoustics.<\/p>\n

Referencing the architecture of the existing building \u2013 as well as records \u2013 circles and arches have been adopted as motifs throughout.<\/p>\n

A large circular oculus skylight is complemented by wall lighting and task lighting integrated in the joinery. The kitchen and dining area is organised around a central island and banquette, with the dining table positioned beneath a row of skylights at the side of the home.<\/p>\n

The new room, which replaces a previous extension, features an inverse mono-pitched roof, and is clad in oak to unify the materiality inside.<\/p>\n

Benjamin Wilkes, based in south-east London, was founded by Benjamin and Joanna Wilkes in 2000.<\/p>\n

Architect\u2019s view<\/h3>\n

We relished the challenge of the brief. On one side, a tidy organised photography producer, with a love of cooking and gardening; on the other, a messy, gregarious art teacher obsessed with collecting and listening to records. Two worlds seemingly at odds with one another that the new space had to harmoniously accommodate. The result is a balanced entertaining space with music and cooking simultaneously enhancing the experience of the other.<\/p>\n

We also had to address the small garden and make it work harder. We demolished a badly constructed awkward larger extension, replacing it with one with a smaller footprint, which provides more external space. We also tiered the planting at the back of the garden to create informal places to sit but also provide much-needed visual depth. The inside\/outside window seat activates the in-between zone, providing a tranquil place to pause and enjoy the garden in all seasons.

Client\u2019s view<\/h3>\n

We loved the idea of working with a young, fresh company who were really excited about our project. They worked with us to create a truly timeless, classic design and the change has been monumental. Music is now at the heart of the house. Instead of being stored away in a cupboard, it\u2019s ever-present and feeds into day-to-day life, which is exactly what we\u2019d hoped for.<\/p>\n

Having a child and renovating a house are, arguably, two of the hardest things you can do and we did them both at the same time. I don\u2019t know how we would have made it through without Ben!
