On one side, a tidy organised photography producer, with a love of cooking and gardening; on the other, a messy, gregarious art teacher obsessed with collecting and listening to records. Two worlds seemingly at odds with one another that the new space had to harmoniously accommodate. The result is a balanced entertaining space with music and cooking simultaneously enhancing the experience of the other.

We also had to address the small garden and make it work harder. We demolished a badly constructed awkward larger extension, replacing it with one with a smaller footprint, which provides more external space. We also tiered the planting at the back of the garden to create informal places to sit but also provide much-needed visual depth. The inside/outside window seat activates the in-between zone, providing a tranquil place to pause and enjoy the garden in all seasons.
Benjamin Wilkes, director, Benjamin Wilkes Architects

Client’s view

We loved the idea of working with a young, fresh company who were really excited about our project.
