The building accommodates a swimming pool and a range of relaxation rooms. The main volume is 63m2<\/sup> and has been angled to connect with the landscape.<\/p>\n

This contains the 1.4m-deep pool whose edges extend to the perimeter walls and a large south-facing window.<\/p>\n

An ancillary building houses showers and dressing rooms and connects to the main house as well as protecting a courtyard to the north. This 38m2<\/sup> volume has a simple monopitch and is connected to the house through a timber-fin, glazed link.<\/p>\n

The space between the two volumes is the relaxation area. Below this is a basement plant room and overflow tank, as well as a wine cellar.<\/p>\n

In the main house, an old snooker room has been repurposed into a new games room and gym.<\/p>\n

Internally, the space has a whitewashed glulam cathedral-like diagrid ceiling, designed to look as if it is floating above the swimming pool and has a 9m-long skylight.<\/p>\n

All services have been cast into accessible and maintainable voids under the water while a ventilation system is incorporated into the steel ring beam supporting the roof.<\/p>\n

To help reduce the high energy demands of the indoor pool, Klas Hyll\u00e9n Architecture has designed a super-airtight structure.<\/p>\n

Architect\u2019s view<\/h3>\n

The space is a sensory experience. We think it is visually stunning, but the experience really comes to life in person \u2013 it\u2019s about all the senses, acoustics, temperature, tactility, and the smell of water on brick which gives off this very pleasant mineral, almost monastic scent. The air handling unit is the beating heart of this, ensuring a constant temperature at about 29\u00b0C and humidity at about 55 per cent. We love the interplay with the natural surroundings, and joy of being part of the landscape. And it\u2019s backstroke only here as you stargaze into the cosmos for a spot of night swimming.
