{"id":766206,"date":"2024-12-02T07:26:58","date_gmt":"2024-12-02T07:26:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/?p=766206"},"modified":"2024-12-02T12:37:23","modified_gmt":"2024-12-02T12:37:23","slug":"cladding-removal-action-plan-announced","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/cladding-removal-action-plan-announced","title":{"rendered":"Accelerated timeline for post-Grenfell cladding works revealed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Announcing the new targets and measures, deputy prime minister Angela Rayner said the pace of safety works since the 2017 tragedy had been \u2018far too slow\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The government said less than a third of identified buildings in England had been remediated, adding that there could be thousands more structures requiring attention beyond this known queue.<\/p>\n<p>It pledged that a state-funded scheme would fix all buildings at least 18m tall with unsafe cladding by the end of 2029.<\/p>\n<p>Ministers added that all structures that were 11m or higher would need to have at least have a date for completion by the end of this decade for landlords to avoid \u2018severe penalties\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The government promised investment in enforcement to give local authorities, fire and rescue bodies and the Building Safety Regulator capacity to tackle \u2018hundreds of cases per year\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>It said it would publish a joint action plan with developers to accelerate their work to fix the buildings they are responsible for.<\/p>\n<p>Some 29 developers, covering more than 95 per cent of the buildings the private sector is remediating, have committed to more than doubling the rate at which they have been assessing and starting to fix these structures, ministers revealed.<\/p>\n<p>This means work on all such buildings should start by summer 2027.<\/p>\n<p>Rayner said:\u202f\u2018More than seven years on from the Grenfell tragedy, thousands of people have been left living in homes across this country with dangerous cladding.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The pace of remediation has been far too slow for far too long. We are taking decisive action to right this wrong and make homes safe.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Our remediation acceleration plan will ensure those responsible for making buildings safe deliver the change residents need and deserve.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Building safety minister Alex Norris added: \u2018Every resident deserves to feel safe in their home. By setting a clear timeline and firm deadlines, today\u2019s announcement is a major step towards ensuring every building is made safe.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Our remediation acceleration plan will fix buildings faster, identify all buildings with unsafe cladding and support vulnerable residents.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;This underscores our unwavering commitment to safeguarding residents and holding those responsible to account. We will not hesitate to actively pursue the owners of buildings who refuse to act.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The National Audit Office (NAO) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/cladding-removal-could-cost-up-to-22bn-says-national-audit-office\">said last month<\/a> that the cost of remediating thousands of buildings with Grenfell-style cladding could end up reaching \u00a322.4 billion.<\/p>\n<p>The watchdog estimated that 7,200 buildings requiring remediation were still unidentified. Some may never be found, it warned.<\/p>\n<p>The NAO\u2019s report followed publication of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/studio-e-bears-very-significant-responsibility-for-disaster-finds-grenfell-tower-inquiry\">final report<\/a> from the inquiry into the 2017 Grenfell Tower fire, which found that \u2018systemic dishonesty\u2019 on the part of cladding manufacturers contributed to the fire.<\/p>\n<p>Architect Studio E, which oversaw the tower\u2019s fatal refurbishment, was found to have an \u2018overriding responsibility\u2019 for the fire, which killed 72 people.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Announcing the new targets and measures, deputy prime minister Angela Rayner said the pace of safety works since the 2017 tragedy had been \u2018far too slow\u2019.
