But it has been closed since 2023 following the discovery of reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) in its roof.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In spring, Bury Council said refurbishing the building would cost more than \u00a36 million and vowed to consider \u2018all opportunities and options available\u2019, including demolition and replacement with a new indoor market, outdoor covered market, storage container-based market or outdoor market.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Twentieth Century Society applied to have the 60-stall market hall listed, arguing that it was a \u2018technically ambitious and innovative building with a remarkable bird-wing roof\u2019 and \u2018of comparable architectural quality to existing listed post-war indoor markets\u2019.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In its listing bid, the campaign group added that the hall survives \u2018in remarkably good condition externally and its main interiors retain their original character\u2019. It argued that successful RAAC remediation strategies had been drawn up \u2018at a number of listed 20th-century sites\u2019.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But Historic England has said the building \u2018lacked the special interest in a national context required to merit listing\u2019 and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport agreed with its recommendation.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Bury Council told the AJ that a consultant, Mace, has now completed work assessing various options for the future of the Market Hall as well as the nearby Bury Market and Mill Gate Shopping Centre. The council said it would make a decision on the Market Hall\u2019s future in the New Year.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Twentieth Century Society head of casework Coco Whittaker told the AJ demolition was \u2018likely\u2019 given it was included in four of the five options mooted by the council \u2013 and that demolition work had already started on the Bury Market\u2019s loading bay roof, where RAAC was also present.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">UPDATE: Another extremely disappointing decision, as Historic England have recommended not to list Bury Market Hall (1969-71), following an application by C20.<\/p>\n<p>Closed abruptly in October 2023 after RAAC concrete was discovered, it is one of a small number of outstanding post-war\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/lc1AxnILrY\">https:\/\/t.co\/lc1AxnILrY<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/LDfwkMM9tQ\">pic.twitter.com\/LDfwkMM9tQ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 C20 Society (@C20Society) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/C20Society\/status\/1861724987419238640?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 27, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Historic England said: \u2018Bury\u2019s indoor market hall was one of a handful of new market halls built in the post-war period, mainly in the North of England.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Its townscape presence and distinctive external appearance are considered to be of strong local, rather than national interest, and although providing a technically simple and elegant solution to the problems of complex local geology, the design was not technologically advanced or influential.\u2019<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It added: \u2018There are no surviving examples of commissioned artwork within the building, which were a common feature of market buildings of the period, and it is not considered to be one of the Fairhurst architectural practice\u2019s most important works. Alterations made over time have also diminished the integrity of the original design.\u2019<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-766064 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.rt.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/11\/29161413\/Bury-Archives.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"588\" height=\"437\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.rt.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/11\/29161413\/Bury-Archives.webp 588w, https:\/\/cdn.rt.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/11\/29161413\/Bury-Archives-300x223.webp 300w, https:\/\/cdn.rt.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/11\/29161413\/Bury-Archives-230x171.webp 230w, https:\/\/cdn.rt.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/11\/29161413\/Bury-Archives-150x111.webp 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 588px) 100vw, 588px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Bury Market Hall was built on the site of the town\u2019s former Edwardian market, which burned down in the 1960s.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>When it opened in 1971, the town\u2019s mayor, John Skellern, said: \u2018The architect \u2026 must have been possessed of prophetic vision; for out of the ashes of the old building the soaring wings of the new market rise like the mythical phoenix.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The town\u2019s new market hall must surely be one of the most imaginative buildings in the north of England.
