{"id":765707,"date":"2024-12-05T09:10:55","date_gmt":"2024-12-05T09:10:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/?p=765707"},"modified":"2024-12-06T10:08:00","modified_gmt":"2024-12-06T10:08:00","slug":"kingston-university-student-wins-riba-presidents-silver-medal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/kingston-university-student-wins-riba-presidents-silver-medal","title":{"rendered":"Kingston University student wins RIBA President\u2019s Silver Medal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Handed out at the opposite end of the year to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/lesley-lokko-wins-riba-gold-medal-2024\">RIBA Gold Medal for Architecture<\/a>, the President\u2019s Medals recognise the world\u2019s best work by architecture students. This year&#8217;s awards received a record number of entries, according to the RIBA.<\/p>\n<p>Kingston postgraduate Joe Franklin won the Silver Medal \u2013 which recognises the best Part 2 Architecture design project \u2013 for his project <a href=\"https:\/\/www.presidentsmedals.com\/Entry-64681\">Ultra Town<\/a>, reimagining the aborted HS2 Phase 2 site between Birmingham and Manchester as a forested new town.<\/p>\n<p>The project imagines the site\u2019s development over a period of 50 years as it becomes a home for 250,000 people, via a \u2018method of responsible development and new build construction embedded with cycles of support, maintenance and care&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Franklin said it was a \u2018real joy\u2019 to receive the award, \u2018<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">especially for such a quiet and at times, deeply personal project\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>He added: \u2018<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I only hope that the award can go beyond its limitations as a personal achievement, to celebrate the endless support and encouragement from my tutors and friends at the Kingston School of Art.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The RIBA Award for sustainable design at Part 2 was given to Swiss student Nathalie Marj (\u00c9cole Polytechnique F\u00e9d\u00e9rale de Lausanne, &#8216;EPFL&#8217; Lausanne), for her project <a href=\"https:\/\/links.uk.defend.egress.com\/Warning?crId=6749d9335e62d0b7a33cd52c&amp;Domain=emap.com&amp;Lang=en&amp;Base64Url=eNrLKCkpKLbS1y8vL9crKEotzkxJzSspzk1NScwp1kvOz9V3zSspqtQ1MzG2MAQAe4QP9w%3D%3D&amp;@OriginalLink=www.presidentsmedals.com\">Protocols 1610px;\">Source:RIBA<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The RIBA Bronze Medal, for the best design project produced at RIBA Part 1 or equivalent, went to the <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University of Kent\u2019s undergraduate student Victor Williams Salmeron, for this project <a href=\"https:\/\/www.presidentsmedals.com\/Entry-63111\">Forget Me Not<\/a>, an almshouse for former carers on the remains of a Victorian chapel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The project \u2018builds upon ancient vernacular almshouse traditions, creating a symbiotic place of community and individuality for those whose care is only style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Salmeron said it was \u2018incredible and so motivating\u2019 to be recognised with the Bronze award, adding: \u2018I hope that my work can keep questioning and promoting the betterment of current standards of architecture and care.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The RIBA Award for sustainable design at Part 1 was given to Coventry University student Sasha Farnsworth, for her project <a 1610px;\">Source:RIBA<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Alongside the President\u2019s Medals, the 2024 RIBA Annie Spink Award for Excellence in Architectural Education, presented every two years, has been awarded to Jane Anderson, professor and undergraduate programme lead at Oxford Brookes University.<\/p>\n<p>The RIBA praised Anderson for her \u2018innovative, community-minded pedagogical philosophy\u2019, which involves starting every first-year student with a community-oriented building project in the real world.<\/p>\n<p>Anderson said: \u2018This award is really meaningful because I value education so highly as a force for good in society. Once I began teaching, I realised that the process of learning brings out the very best in humanity.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>RIBA president Muyiwa Oki said: \u2018What unites the winning projects is a true marriage of creativity and community spirit, explored with great sensitivity and personal insight.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018For me, these projects show a real awareness of the importance of reuse, elevating people and places that have been overlooked, and the social responsibility of the architect.
