The Modulus Matrix: 85<\/a> scheme in the suburb of Cornell\u00e0 saw off two other finalists to land the bi-annual prize, which is given to the \u2018world\u2019s most transformative building\u2019. It beat David Chipperfield Architects\u2019 conversion of a 19th-century former hospital conversion in Paderborn, Germany; and O-office Architects\u2019 Lianzhou Museum of Photography in China.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0award jury described the Barcelona-based practice<\/a>\u2019s scheme as an \u2018innovative housing project that aims to redefine residential design and construction\u2019.<\/p>\n

The six-storey block houses 85 homes laid out in four groups with 18 apartments on each floor. It was built for a public body, the Metropolitan Institute of Land Development and Property Management.<\/p>\n

Each flat has five or six modules, depending on whether they are two- or three-bedroom units.<\/p>\n

The jury said the \u2018looseness-of-fit\u2019 set this building apart from \u2018more conventional housing\u2019 with the grid-like plan promoting \u2018easy movement and interaction\u2019.<\/p>\n

The practice, founded in 2005 by Marta Peris and Jos\u00e9 Manuel Toral, said this arrangement created a democratic house with no hierarchy between living, eating and sleeping spaces.<\/p>\n

The scheme was built using a mass timber structure and a modular system, creating a \u2018low-impact and time-efficient construction\u2019 which could be rolled out where housing need is greatest.<\/p>\n

RIBA president Muyiwa Oki said the \u2018inspiring\u2019 housing project \u2018embodies the kind of transformational spirit that is both aspirational and demonstrates genuine change\u2019.<\/p>\n

He added: \u2018By embracing flexibility and longevity through long life, loose-fit architecture, it is a radical approach to social housing that creates a place designed for people to adapt and inhabit in the long term.<\/p>\n

\u2018This visionary scheme allows for new and future ideas of what constitutes a family and should be seen as a blueprint for delivering sustainable, quality housing around the world at scale. It is a strong example of the ways in which architects can create new and implementable solutions to the common challenge of creating housing for all.\u2019<\/p>\n

In a joint statement, practice co-founders Peris and Toral said they felt the prize was \u2018recognition of many years focused on housing that provides new ways of living\u2019.<\/p>\n

They said: \u2018We are very proud of the positive feedback from residents of Modulus Matrix. Some were unsure about features like entering through a terrace, having an open kitchen at the centre of the home, and equal-sized rooms without corridors, but their perspectives changed after living in the space.<\/p>\n

\u2018Now they feel this way of living better adapts to their needs. Their first-hand experiences provide valuable insights into how housing around the world can evolve.\u2019<\/p>\n

Modulus Matrix and Chipperfield\u2019s German project were chosen as finalists for the award from the 22 winners of the RIBA International Awards for Excellence, announced in June this year<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Lianzhou Museum of Photography, which was a contender for the prize in 2021, was allowed to re-enter the latest awards cycle since it could not previously be visited due to strict pandemic restrictions.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s jury, who have visited all the schemes, is chaired by Lu Wenyu, co-founder of China\u2019s Amateur Architecture Studio amd includes Nigerian architect Tosin Oshinowo, who curated the Sharjah Architecture Triennial 2023.<\/p>\n

The winner of the previous RIBA International Prize, presented in 2021, was the Friendship Hospital in Bangladesh, designed by Khashef Chowdhury\/URBANA. The scheme, selected from a shortlist of three, was praised for its contribution to the client\u2019s philanthropic mission, use of local and traditional crafted materials, and skilful integration into its natural surroundings.<\/p>\n

In 2018, Aleph Zero and Rosenbaum won the RIBA International Prize 2018 for Children Village in northern Brazil. The inaugural prize was won in 2016 by Grafton Architects for its Universidad de Ingenier\u00eda y Tecnolog\u00eda in Lima, Peru.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the RIBA has also announced the winner of its International Emerging Architect Award 2024, which recognises those making a significant contribution to architecture who have been practising for less than 10 years. The award went to Chinese practice ARCity Office for its project Six Bricolage Houses<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Modulus Matrix is a groundbreaking, six-storey courtyard building of 85 flexible, socially rented homes in Barcelona using timber-frame construction. Since completion, the project has fostered a strong sense of neighbourliness and pride in its resident community.<\/p>\n

Using the tatami mat module of 2.6m x 3.6m, the building is planned around a simple, central, communal courtyard, with four circulation cores in each corner, and each floor is described as a \u2018matrix of communicating rooms\u2019.<\/p>\n

The jury applauded the project\u2019s clear intentions as a commentary on space and construction. While the building is literally a combination of separate apartments, it has come together as one collective domestic space. The efficient use of CLT combined with clever composition creates a duality that is both profoundly poetic and extremely practical.<\/p>\n

Lianzhou Museum of Photography, China, by O-office Architects<\/h4>\n

Lianzhou Museum of Photography was built on the site of a former local sugar mill, with the purpose of revitalising the traditional downtown of Lianzhou, a remote city of northern Guangdong in south China. At the heart of the complex is a retained and refurbished warehouse, wrapped around which is a U-shaped new structure on three to five levels, the two buildings being linked by a mainly external courtyard complex which weaves around galleries and meeting places, balancing contemporary arts with local identity.<\/p>\n

The jury praised the physical and spiritual integration of the project into the fabric and community, together with its visceral beauty.<\/p>\n

Having developed somewhat organically as the result of photography exhibitions, the publicly funded project beautifully balances contemporary arts with local identity, marrying the past and the present within the material culture of the place.<\/p>\n

Jacoby Studios, Paderborn, Germany, by David Chipperfield Architects Berlin<\/h4>\n

Sited in Paderborn, a medieval town in the north Rhine region of Germany, Jacoby Studios is an example of innovative and sensitive reordering of existing buildings within a historic setting to create a new headquarters for a family-run business.<\/p>\n

The project results in a harmonious form, with existing stone and brick walls repaired and left exposed with new concrete and timber elements stitching together parts of the ruin to integrate the new extended form that mediates between the old and new.<\/p>\n

The jury commented on the beautiful execution in mixing repair and restoration with disciplined new-build. By celebrating the presence of the Gothic monastery with new wings, the building offers a model for sophisticated office space with a richness that is difficult to emulate in a new speculative office build.<\/p>\n
