Set against a backdrop of mature pine trees, the house, which had been unsympathetically extended in the 1990s, has been clad in a highly insulated fa\u00e7ade of white handmade brickwork with pale flush mortar joints, while a single-storey extension wraps around at ground level.<\/p>\n

Openings in the fa\u00e7ade have been deeply articulated to give the house a sculptural monolithic quality that changes in different lights. Outside is a sunken seating area, terraced patio and brick planters with ornamental pine trees \u2013 intended to act as a bridge between the house and its woodland setting.<\/p>\n

The project also includes a full interior fit-out. On the ground floor there is now a bespoke kitchen, utility, pantry and boot room, and a new kitchen\/dining area opening out onto the west-facing garden with views to the pines. At first-floor level, bedrooms and bathrooms have been refitted with customised joinery elements.<\/p>\n

New rooflights and large windows flood natural light into the interiors, in which a pared-back palette of materials, neutral decoration and subtle lighting are designed to create a series of calm spaces.<\/p>\n

Architect\u2019s view<\/h3>\n

The exterior of the house was designed to meet the very specific request of our client, who was not enthused by the traditional look of the existing 1930s property and particularly disliked the clumsy and overbearing 1990s extension. She asked for a warm, efficient and relaxing family home.<\/p>\n

The decision to refurbish the existing property was partly driven by programme \u2013 a demolition and new-build would have involved lengthier time scales through a backlogged planning system and could be contentious. The challenge therefore was to transform an existing house that was composed of varying floor levels and was burdened with an unsympathetic extension, which overfilled the site.<\/p>\n

As well as addressing the property\u2019s appearance, the design strategy significantly improves the thermal performance of the external fabric. The varying depth of the new brick fa\u00e7ade (which is constructed in front of the existing brickwork) provides an insulated cavity that ranges in thickness from 125mm to 240mm. This is combined with insulated render to the remaining external walls, retrofit ground-floor insulation and loft insulation. Triple-glazed composite windows and doors complete the new thermally upgraded envelope.<\/p>\n

The level of ambition, design detail and the work involved in this project was extremely demanding and involved managing a diverse range of contractors, consultants and suppliers \u2013 many of whom had not previously undertaken a project of this complexity. As a young practice developing a portfolio of built work, the experience we have gained on this project has been invaluable and we are very proud of what we have achieved. We are very pleased that our client and her family are happy in their home.
