{"id":764550,"date":"2024-11-18T10:08:54","date_gmt":"2024-11-18T10:08:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/?p=764550"},"modified":"2024-11-18T10:08:54","modified_gmt":"2024-11-18T10:08:54","slug":"fewer-than-half-of-construction-projects-hitting-sustainability-goals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/fewer-than-half-of-construction-projects-hitting-sustainability-goals","title":{"rendered":"Fewer than half of construction projects hitting sustainability goals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Just four in every 10 construction projects achieve their sustainability targets, according to new data gathered by construction specification platform NBS (National Building Specification).<\/p>\n<p>The company surveyed 600 built environment professionals for its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenbs.com\/sustainable-futures-uk-report-2024?utm_source=PR&amp;utm_medium=Download\"><em>Sustainable Futures<\/em><\/a> report, scrutinising sustainability attitudes and protocols within the sector.<\/p>\n<p>Worryingly, fewer people say they are hitting their project sustainability targets, compared with when NBS carried out the same study in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Respondents blamed costs for their failure to hit sustainability targets on projects, with 63 per cent citing the cost of achieving sustainability as the main barrier to their success.<\/p>\n<p>A lack of client demand was another \u2018major\u2019 barrier to sustainability, cited by 50 per cent of respondents.<\/p>\n<p>And sustainable products being \u2018value engineered\u2019 out of projects was described as a barrier by 41 per cent of respondents, indicating \u2018a suspicion around [their] value for money\u2019, according to NBS.<\/p>\n<p>Architects, more than other built environment professionals, blamed a lack of government policy and regulation as a major issue when trying to hit sustainability targets (36 per cent of those surveyed overall said this was a problem).<\/p>\n<p>Of those surveyed, almost 90 per cent had worked on at least some projects which included sustainability goals, but just 16 per cent said they work on projects with set sustainability targets \u2018all of the time\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>In the sustainability \u2018priorities list\u2019, respondents said <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">net zero operational carbon was their top priority, while embodied carbon was ranked fourth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>According to NBS, this result was \u2018surprising\u2019, but \u2018l<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ikely, due to legislation covering operational efficiency but not embodied carbon\u2019. Elsewhere, respondents ranked embodied carbon as the most important of the life cycle analysis stages from environmental product declarations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Nearly all of architects (94 per cent) surveyed agreed that <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">manufacturers should supply digital information on the green credentials of their products to boost their chances of specification, and almost as many (93 per cent) agree that a \u2018robust specification\u2019 is important for achieving sustainability outcomes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lee Jones, head of sustainability at Hubexo, the global construction tech firm that owns NBS, said: \u2018<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With COP29 under way, it\u2019s important to get a real understanding of how seriously sustainability is being taken within construction. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Our research has identified the most common perceived barriers to progress but, arguably, the largest barrier is our industry as a whole.
