/>

Architect’s view

Much of our domestic work relating to existing dwellings is concerned with the same, simple, questions. Do the spaces that we are working with create the right social and functional framework to support and nurture day-to-day family life? And, do those spaces offer the opportunity for meaningful connection between their users, and the natural environment beyond? Usually, the most successful projects from our experience, are those where the minimum of new architectural interventions are required as a response.

Whilst the existing site and dwelling at Ladywood Mead were undoubtedly special, and architecturally unique, it was immediately clear where the building’s short comings in response to these questions were. Whilst the internal route through the building did deliver in terms of providing the impressive view of the woodlands at the rear of the site, it did not provide any actual means of physically interacting with the landscape. The lounge spaces that provided the views were then prioritised within the plan of the building, and the spaces that are socially and functionally central to modern family life, such as the kitchen, were relegated to small, back-of-house areas.

So, the architectural response to the project in terms of completing the route through the building, such that it provided both visual and physical connection to landscape and organised key family spaces along the way, became quite straightforward. The challenge was how these interventions should be designed, such that the transition between the spaces that were old and spaces that are new felt seamless. If this has been achieved on the project it is because of the restrained design of the new architectural elements, and the skill of our client in her intuitive handling of the interior design.
Ian Hazard

Client’s view

The setting of our house is unique and when we first saw it, we knew we wanted to do something to honour both the mid-century architecture and the beautiful setting it is in. Working with Ian was such a brilliant process, he understood how we wanted our home to work with children and busy lives and also felt on the same wavelength for design references and inspirations.

The key thing we wanted to achieve with our home was to provide easier access, better connection to the woodland and to feel more immersed in our beautiful views. The design of the house has achieved this in spades and it’s such a wonderful feeling being connected to nature at all times.

The interiors were obviously incredibly important to me, and I focused on retaining a mid-century feel whilst doing a full refurb.
