{"id":763240,"date":"2024-11-11T08:26:01","date_gmt":"2024-11-11T08:26:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/?p=763240"},"modified":"2024-11-11T09:03:46","modified_gmt":"2024-11-11T09:03:46","slug":"stanton-williams-completes-mixed-use-development-in-city-of-london","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/buildings\/stanton-williams-completes-mixed-use-development-in-city-of-london","title":{"rendered":"Stanton Williams completes mixed-use development in City of London"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Stanton Williams\u2019 five-storey mixed-use development replaces two poor-quality existing buildings adjacent to Mercers\u2019 Hall in the heart of the City of London.<\/p>\n<p>The Whittington Building is embedded in a sensitive site within the historic Guildhall Conservation Area and its massing and materiality are informed by its context with each fa\u00e7ade carefully crafted to respond to its immediate surroundings.<\/p>\n<p>On Frederick\u2019s Place, a new brick fa\u00e7ade aims to retain the rhythm and scale of the surrounding Georgian buildings, providing access to the offices above as well as to a new public arcade at street level. The fa\u00e7ade features a gentle curve that follows the existing street, establishing a vertical rhythm of punched windows with a layering of deep reveals that adds depth and movement.<\/p>\n<p>The upper floors are set back to mediate between the more imposing scale of neighbouring Becket House and the smaller scale of the adjacent 1910 Dauntsey House on the northern edge of the site. Where the Whittington Building turns the corner into St Olave\u2019s Court, its materiality changes to a handmade red brick sympathetic to surrounding buildings.<\/p>\n<p>The reception area is accessible from both Ironmonger Lane and Frederick\u2019s Place and features timber-panelled walls with terrazzo tiled floors and a site-specific glass installation by artist Catherine Lee entitled <em>A Cloth of Gold Bright Shoon<\/em>. This was commissioned by the Mercers\u2019 Company through a Glaziers\u2019 Company competition in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Internally, varying window treatments take advantage of the characteristics of the three elevations. The remaining finishes and material palette of the office spaces are deliberately pared back.<\/p>\n<p>The Mercers\u2019 Company, is a livery company part of the Great Twelve City Livery Companies.
