{"id":762689,"date":"2024-11-06T09:55:18","date_gmt":"2024-11-06T09:55:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/?p=762689"},"modified":"2024-11-07T08:25:13","modified_gmt":"2024-11-07T08:25:13","slug":"chipperfield-project-in-final-three-for-riba-international-prize","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/chipperfield-project-in-final-three-for-riba-international-prize","title":{"rendered":"Chipperfield project in final three for RIBA International Prize"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The practice\u2019s Jacoby Studios scheme is vying for the title of the \u2018world\u2019s most transformative building\u2019 against Modulus Matrix: 85, a timber-framed social housing scheme in Barcelona by Peris + Toral Arquitecte, and O-office Architects\u2019 Lianzhou Museum of Photography, Lianzhou, China.<\/p>\n<p>Chipperfield\u2019s German project and the Spanish development were among the 22 winners of the RIBA International Awards for Excellence, announced in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/chipperfield-projects-dominate-ribas-2024-international-awards\">June this year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Lianzhou Museum of Photography, which was a contender for the prize in 2021, was allowed to re-enter the latest RIBA International Awards cycle as the project could not previously be visited due to strict pandemic restrictions.<\/p>\n<p>RIBA president Muyiwa Oki said: \u2018The conservation of the planet\u2019s resources and the provision of the best housing in which people can grow and thrive remain two of the central concerns of architects around the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018From a timber-framed social housing building with an inventive use of space, to two projects focused on the repair, restoration and transformation of buildings to create new and useful space to work or participate in culture, these three inspiring projects demonstrate the ability of architecture to meet shared, global challenges head on.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>As well as the Jacoby Studios, two other Chipperfield schemes were in the running for the prize, which is open to any registered architect in the world and to a building of any size, type or budget.<\/p>\n<p>They were the renovation of Mies van der Rohe\u2019s Neue Nationalgalerie art museum in Berlin and Morland Mixit\u00e9 Capitale, a revamped office complex in Paris designed with Parisian architecture firm CALQ.<\/p>\n<p>Other Excellence Award winners designed by UK firms to miss out include the Sharanam Centre for Rural Development transforming a site in Pondicherry, India by Manchester-based architect <a href=\"https:\/\/jateenlad.com\/ux-portfolio\/sharanam-centre-for-rural-development\/\">Jateen Lad<\/a> and a winery and hotel on the island of Pico in the Azores by DRDH and Portugal-based Sami Arquitectos.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s grand jury, who have visited all the schemes, is chaired by Lu Wenyu, co-founder of China&#8217;s Amateur Architecture Studio amd includes Nigerian architect Tosin Oshinowo who curated\u00a0 the Sharjah Architecture Triennial 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The winner of the previous RIBA International Prize, presented in 2021, was the Friendship Hospital in Bangladesh, designed by Khashef Chowdury\/URBANA. The scheme, selected from a shortlist of three outstanding entries, was praised for its contribution to the client\u2019s philanthropic mission, use of local and traditional crafted materials, and skilful integration into its natural surroundings.<\/p>\n<p>In 2018, Aleph Zero and Rosenbaum won the RIBA International Prize 2018 for Children Village in northern Brazil. The inaugural prize was won in 2016 by Grafton Architects for its Universidad de Ingenier\u00eda y Tecnolog\u00eda in Lima, Peru.<\/p>\n<p>The winner of the 2024 accolade will be announced on 27 November 2024.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: 0;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!4v1730884466050!6m8!1m7!1snNkvDw7XNw1rESssymrXuw!2m2!1d51.72051152870479!2d8.75053809205288!3f352.85!4f-11.950000000000003!5f0.7820865974627469\" width=\"100%\" height=\"450\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div class=\"factfile\">\n<h3>The 2024 shortlist with citations<\/h3>\n<h4>Jacoby Studios, Paderborn, Germany, by David Chipperfield Architects Berlin<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Sited in Paderborn, a medieval town in the north Rhine region of Germany, Jacoby Studios is an example of innovative and sensitive reordering of existing buildings within a historic setting to create a new headquarters for a family run business.<\/p>\n<p>The project results in a harmonious form, with existing stone and brick walls repaired and left exposed with new concrete and timber elements stitching together parts of the ruin to integrate the new extended form that mediates between the old and new.<\/p>\n<p>The jury commented on the beautiful execution in mixing repair and restoration with disciplined new-build. Since completion, the project has fostered a strong sense of neighbourliness and pride in its resident community.<\/p>\n<p>Using the tatami mat module of 2.6m x 3.6m, the building is planned around a simple, central, communal courtyard, with four circulation cores in each corner, and each floor described as a \u2018matrix of communicating rooms\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The jury applauded the project\u2019s clear intentions as a commentary on space and construction. While the building is literally a combination of separate apartments, it has come together as one collective domestic space.
