{"id":762312,"date":"2024-11-14T11:18:59","date_gmt":"2024-11-14T11:18:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/?p=762312"},"modified":"2024-11-14T12:46:14","modified_gmt":"2024-11-14T12:46:14","slug":"ahmm-publishes-built-project-carbon-data-for-first-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/ahmm-publishes-built-project-carbon-data-for-first-time","title":{"rendered":"AHMM publishes built-project carbon data for first time"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Data shared with the AJ \u2013 and published by the AJ100 practice in September \u2013 outlines both direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions associated with its work, with Scope 3 emissions, from completed projects, included for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>Publication of the firm\u2019s Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions comes after the company\u2019s annual financial report for April 2022 to March 2023, published at the end of last year, identified IT as contributing a third of all its greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"LPlnk506908\" title=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/ahmm-losses-nearly-double-to-1-8m-despite-revenue-increase\" href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/ahmm-losses-nearly-double-to-1-8m-despite-revenue-increase\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"0\">That report<\/a> stated that total operational emissions were 1,410 tCO<span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW102955802 BCX0\">2<\/span>e for the April 2022 to March 2023 period.<\/p>\n<p>Controversially, the practice did not include upfront embodied carbon from completed projects in its reported Scope 3 emissions at the time of that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/ahmm-losses-nearly-double-to-1-8m-despite-revenue-increase\">report<\/a>. But now, AHMM is thought to be one of the first of the major UK practices to make its full Scope 3 emissions public.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/links.uk.defend.egress.com\/Warning?crId=6735ebcf335d69e97d2e2266&amp;Domain=emap.com&amp;Lang=en&amp;Base64Url=eNoVysENwCAIAMCJhH-3QWMjqYARDOn2Te99I2L5hZiZQEMEmsF5cG27eXb040GsVHlyvPiP0mhX09KF3dnU8QN3dRn-&amp;@OriginalLink=www.ahmm.co.uk\">data<\/a> shows that AHMM\u2019s emissions resulting from the upfront embodied carbon of completed projects in 2023 rose from<span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW102955802 BCX0\"> 80,400 tCO2e in 2022 to 102,000 tCO2e in 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">However, retrofit schemes and buildings with larger footprints but greater carbon efficiency <\/span>mean t<span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW102955802 BCX0\">he carbon intensity of those completed <\/span><span class=\"FindHit SCXW102955802 BCX0\">projects<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW102955802 BCX0\"> reduced from 628 kgCO2e\/m<sup>2<\/sup> GIA to <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW102955802 BCX0\">553<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW102955802 BCX0\">kgCO2e\/m<sup>2<\/sup> GIA, the practice said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, AHMM\u2019s operational emissions have reduced from 1,410 tCO<span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW102955802 BCX0\">2<\/span>e to 1,010 tCO<span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW102955802 BCX0\">2<\/span>e between 2022 and 2023 \u2013 a decline of 400 tCO<span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW102955802 BCX0\">2<\/span>e. That was despite an increasing number of staff returning to its office post-pandemic, which resulted in a rise in direct Scope 1 and 2 emissions. These derive from the gas boilers at AHMM\u2019s London headquarters and purchased electricity across all locations.<\/p>\n<p>The practice said its biggest operational carbon savings were made through changes to IT equipment and in-house events programmes, where <span class=\"TextRun SCXW24717962 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW24717962 BCX0\">513 tCO<span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW102955802 BCX0\">2<\/span>e has been saved compared to 2022.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>AHMM\u2019s head of sustainability, Craig Robertson, said: \u2018These figures show that AHMM is on track to deliver against our operational and project carbon reduction commitments. However, we cannot be complacent.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The balance of our operational emissions needs to be carefully monitored, particularly as our studio events programme is re-established. Similarly, our design decisions will continue to be closely reviewed and interrogated using our in-house tools to ensure that we are driving robust low-carbon decisions.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgrid.com\/stories\/energy-explained\/what-are-scope-1-2-3-carbon-emissions#:~:text=Scope%203%20encompasses%20emissions%20that,dispose%20of%20products%20from%20suppliers.\">National Grid Group<\/a>, \u2018Scope 3 encompasses emissions that are not produced by the company itself and are not the result of activities from assets owned or controlled by them.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Typically, practices do not include Scope 3 when calculating their emissions. Instead, Scope 1 and 2 are used to cover direct emissions associated with running an office.<\/p>\n<p>Many practices do not include the embodied carbon from projects they design in their reported Scope 3 emissions. This is the subject of disagreement in the industry. A leading <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/get-up-to-speed-on-embodied-carbon-now-say-leading-developers\">group of property developers<\/a> has called on architects to join them in counting and declaring such project emissions, partly in order to transform the profession\u2019s environmental approach and \u2018climate literacy\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>AHMM says it is committed to reducing its emissions by 42 per cent by 2030 and 90 per cent by 2040.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Data shared with the AJ \u2013 and published by the AJ100 practice in September \u2013 outlines both direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions associated with its work, with Scope 3 emissions, from completed projects, included for the first time.
