What has been your biggest achievement so far?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong>The biggest achievement is surviving 20 years! No, joking apart, it\u2019s setting up a second office in Crathie in Aberdeenshire, and building it as client, contractor and end-occupier. At the time, it was the culmination of what the practice had been doing for 15 years. Though it\u2019s just one among many projects, it was specifically for us. How do you balance the two in the office and the scales you work across?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong>It doesn\u2019t matter what kind of project we\u2019re on \u2013 we love to design. We love to make things and be involved in that process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">In our office there are reams of detail paper. On one there might be a sketch of a cable stay bridge and, next to it, a kitchen layout for a private residential project.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Design is scalable. We\u2019re architects but we\u2019re designers, really. And design is a process of understanding a problem and trying to address it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">How one does that differs, whether through a bolt of inspiration or through iteration. Yes, there are different contracts, different environments, different forms of procurement. But, fundamentally the process is the same.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">You can also get blinkered as designers. If you\u2019re stuck on one type of project for too long, you get blind to what you\u2019re seeing. So having a complete break and moving onto a completely different scale in a different sector is healthy for the creative process.<\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s3\">What is your approach to infrastructure projects?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s2\">Bridges are emblematic of what an infrastructure project is and they are fascinating because they\u2019re very pure design problems. They can be instrumental in ways buildings tend not to be.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">They span a gap of \u2013 often \u2013 nature. And that\u2019s where the purity lies in it as a design problem. For us, we think there is a modern tendency to think of bridge design as an engineering problem. It is. But it is also an architectural problem. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Going back in history, there was no distinction between engineering and architecture. For example, Thomas Telford was a stonemason, then an architect and then the first civil engineer in the modern world. And towards the end of his career, he was erecting buildings again.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">We\u2019re lucky as a practice to be able to work with some amazing structural engineers in the UK who also get involved in aesthetics. They\u2019re able to talk about architecture but we also talk about structural forms and how they\u2019re achieved \u2013 whether it\u2019s through efficiency or lightness.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Landscape is of paramount importance for us as a practice \u2013 whether its cityscape, rural or somewhere in-between. We\u2019re leading often big and expensive projects \u2013 both in terms of economic, opportunity, carbon and material cost \u2013 and they change landscapes for a long time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">For us, that\u2019s the first responsibility: to look at what you\u2019re changing. You have a responsibility not to wreck the situation that you found.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">That\u2019s crucial for projects such as HS2. Our part of HS2 goes through the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. We find ourselves competing against the same practices and know them very well. It\u2019s a small world. It makes for nice conversations and friendly competitiveness, which is enjoyable. But there\u2019s so much infrastructure work in the world and it would benefit from an architectural sensibility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">The work that Sadie Morgan and her colleagues on the HS2 design panel board are doing, as well as the National Infrastructure Commission, has really moved the discussion on in this country a lot. It feels a natural way to go about these projects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">What do you think is distinctive about the Moxon way of working?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/strong>Our priorities. And not being precious when we\u2019re working collaboratively. You\u2019re all part of a team. Architects can get hung up on authorship but, ultimately, it\u2019s always a team effort.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">There\u2019s always something that crops up on site that will affect even the biggest of projects. You expect it on house extensions; but it applies across the board. So that openness to teamwork is important. <span class=\"s4\">We\u2019re very much design-led. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s4\">It goes back to the creative process and how we get there. It can be painful sometimes but at times a simple solution is obvious. Having an eye for something, no matter in what sector or at what scale, is a key principle for us. You have a duty to make it as good as it can be.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qyTqNaXjYvg?si=7mTSn-RorDJByaBb\" width=\"100%\" height=\"440\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Tell me about your approach to materials on your projects<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong>It\u2019s a bit of a clich\u00e9, but context is key. That drives a lot of decisions on what a project is going to look like, whether it\u2019s a bridge or a building.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">What really helps us and contributes to a richness of materials is having two studios: one in London and one in Scotland. We\u2019re two studios, one office. However, we\u2019re constantly speaking to each other and working together. For example, both studios are working on HS2, one of our largest projects to date.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">That constant dialogue and learning about the materials used informs our approach. On the first preapplication meeting, a lot of comments were made about the aesthetic of Brent Cross Visitor Pavilion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">It straddles being an urban and rural building because of its setting in parkland. How do you ensure that the building or bridge is appropriate and can be used sustainably? And will function properly into the future?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Our discussions about materials and embodied energy are very much at the forefront of every project. The bridge design aspect that we\u2019ve always been involved in has influenced our approach in conventional building projects, too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">For us it\u2019s often about achieving a kind of elegance and simplicity in material use. You might look at a cable stay bridge and think \u2018that\u2019s very lightweight it must have very little material\u2019, but there are often enormous quantities of concrete in the ground. You\u2019re replacing a lack of material above ground with a huge amount of material below ground. We don\u2019t like to do that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">We\u2019re always trying to look at how you can achieve material efficiency in a structure. It\u2019s a huge team, but we\u2019ve really held our own. That has given us a huge amount of confidence to go out there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">The prospects in North America are fantastic: we\u2019re getting involved in a lot of work there now and we\u2019ve also won competitions in Europe.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">We still love the small stuff, though. We love designing buildings.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">We\u2019ve always been a steady ship, which is a real positive. We have a gradual, methodical, considered approach to business, which has been important to the practice.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Where we\u2019re going? Roughly half of our work by turnover is in infrastructure. Our first one, The Fife Arms in Braemar, was a mega-restoration project, where we were principal contractor. We took on quite serious parts of a role that\u2019s usually outside the architect\u2019s scope.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">We\u2019re looking to do the same again \u2013 perhaps being main contractor, that is \u2013 although our next much larger hotel is being procured more conventionally. We\u2019ve been working on this for the past four or five years and it will be on site next year.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">We take work and do it as well as we can. It\u2019s a slower strategy for us!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">What piece of advice would you give to emerging architect practices just starting out in the industry? <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/strong>Be prepared for the long game \u2013 and have a very good accountant! Running a practice can be very rewarding in itself. But you must take the rewards when they come. Sometimes they\u2019re small and sometimes they\u2019re larger.
