Degree apprenticeships at level 7 are proven to enhance social mobility, by giving individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds the opportunity to follow a pathway into the professions, gain access to higher education and also achieve higher-paid, senior-level positions further in their career.’

Around 90 per cent of roles in architecture and other sectors will require higher-level skills by 2035, Crawford-Lee added. That means more people working in architecture will seek level 6 and level 7 training to upskill.

In an announcement last month, the government said it would ask employers ‘to rebalance their funding for apprenticeships [by] asking them to invest in younger workers’.

It added: ‘This will also involve businesses funding more of their level 7 apprenticeships – equivalent to a master’s degree and often accessed by older or already well-qualified employees – outside of the levy.’

Full details of the proposed changes to apprenticeship funding are expected early next year at the latest, the UVAC says.

The Department for Education was contacted for comment.

Comment

Peter Garstecki, education manager, Foster + Partners

As chair of the Apprenticeship Trailblazer architecture group, we strongly support the apprenticeship scheme and want to see its continuing growth in both Level 6 and Level 7 programmes

Helen Taylor, director of practice, Scott Brownrigg

Alternative routes to qualification are vital to sustaining the profession and ensuring that a wide range of voices and experiences can influence our built environment

One of the main reasons we invested time and effort into establishing architectural apprenticeships was to address a high dropout rate, which seemed to have the biggest impact on individuals already under-represented in the profession.

Since the apprenticeship scheme was established, we have seen a huge demand from students wanting to learn through this route.
