Set in the heart of Covent Garden, the first store for new chocolate bar brand Barnaby brings bespoke chocolate-making to the forefront of customers\u2019 retail experience, with a craft-driven design that reflects the brand\u2019s whimsical yet inherently traditional values.<\/p>\n

Having already devised the brand, creative direction and interiors with the client, Morrisstudio approached Built Works to lead and develop the architectural elements, inside and out. Just like the chocolate bars, Built Works\u2019 design showcases traditional techniques and natural materials in an honest manner, with a focus on skilled craftsmanship, from the bespoke shopfront and joinery to the hand-made ceramic tile floor.<\/p>\n

Every aspect of the design is rooted in the history and traditions of UK chocolate-making, specifically the village of Bournville, which was purpose-built by the Cadbury family for the workers in its chocolate factory. References to Bournville\u2019s Arts and Crafts influences can be seen in the oversized shopfront, which protrudes towards the street with a carefully crafted tusk and tenon joint, enticing visitors to stop and admire the chocolate bars as they are coated, hand-cut and displayed.<\/p>\n

Within, Built Works\u2019 and Morrisstudio\u2019s unique patterned flooring welcomes customers inside and defines the shop floor, complementing the solid oak joinery, silver granite worktops, detailed wall panelling and vaulted ceiling.

Architect\u2019s choices<\/h2>\n

Having worked with CommonObjects on architectural ceramics in the past, Built Works saw Morrisstudio\u2019s concept floor design as an exciting opportunity to develop a unique tiling solution. Opting for bespoke tiles, rather than an off-the-shelf product, allowed Built Works to optimise each flooring element in terms of aesthetics and performance. By selecting heavily grogged, pale stoneware clay for the tiles and firing glazes at high temperatures, the team was able to create a hardwearing, high-quality floor that is impact-resistant, and preserves the tile pattern for the long term.<\/p>\n

A durable and practical vinyl finish was chosen for the kitchen, to meet slip resistance guidance. As the kitchen is also in full view of the shop window, Built Works opted for a subtle, neutral vinyl colour, which also complements the rich tile colours in the retail area.

Specification<\/span><\/h2>\n

The centrepiece of the store\u2019s interior is the floor tiling, which was developed by Built Works with ceramic studio Common Objects to Morrisstudio\u2019s concept design.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

As with the rest of the project, the practice worked closely with Morrisstudio and the client to understand their vision for this element and to develop their tiling design into production. The bespoke floor features a repeating geometric pattern made up of slim, rectangular tiles, reminiscent of Barnaby chocolate bars lined up to be chocolate-coated. Built Works and Common Objects performed many rounds of testing, cutting and firing of the clay tiles at their shared Lake District workshop to find a clay type and form that would suit the requirements of a busy shop floor. In keeping with Morrisstudio\u2019s vision, the practice took time and care to develop durable tiles that could be batch-produced to the detailed specification, while retaining the unique, hand-made qualities that underpin the Barnaby brand and its wider ethos.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Nods back to Bournville can be seen in the tile glazes, which are inspired by the colour palettes found in the 1930s posters used to promote the village as a place to live. Built Works continued the extensive development process to select the colour and texture of the glazes, bringing the brand\u2019s colours to life in the space.
