The room was to be situated at the end of the garden, beneath a large tree, and initial thoughts were of a retreat, a special place one would choose to be, rather than feel banished to.

The garden setting invites references to the natural environment. The large tree canopy seems to protect the small building below. The pergola structure, as intermediate space, provides a threshold between the shared garden and the interior space while the sliding perforated screens give a sense of layering and privacy. The large circular opening offsets the rectilinear garden elevation and, when backlit, will glow in the dark of night.

To augment the sense of shadow and seclusion the external envelope is of black charred timber. The interior, by contrast, is light and bright. Crossing diagonal roof joists echo the tree branches while circular skylights bring in dappled light and views up into the tree canopy. Another small round window, at the rear, looks towards the tangle of climbers on the boundary wall, where perhaps the occasional fox passes.

The floor finish is of pale Douglas fir, which, with its strong large grain, is a reminder of the tree roots below. The simple open interior can be easily inhabited. The orientation of the building and the highly insulated timber frame construction work together to provide a very comfortable living environment in all seasons.

Client’s view

Following the sale of the Lancashire pub that the family had owned for 40 years, the client’s mother was invited to move in with her daughter and family in Stockwell, south London. It was decided to build a garden room that would provide a more secluded space away from the main house. A plot was identified at the rear of the garden, which was currently occupied by a raised patio.

The brief to the architects had two key sets of drivers, the first practical and the second aesthetic. The practical requirements were to create a self-contained living area that included space for a bed, shower room, kitchenette and an area for relaxing. The aesthetic aspirations were for a building that would nestle comfortably under the soaring ash tree and, at the same time, share a degree of connection with the main house.

It was decided to blend a dark exterior with a light interior. The charred timber cladding is not only beautiful in its own right but seamlessly integrates with its green surrounds, as well as mirroring the black paintwork of the main house. The pergola structure provides a surprisingly roomy porch and acts as a natural bridge to the garden.

Meanwhile, the timber trellis successfully softens the sliding doors as well as aiding privacy, with a portal cut into it offering an uninterrupted view of the garden.

This contrasts with the much brighter interior. Three skylights flood the space with light as well as providing tantalising views of the tree canopy above. This natural light works to amplify the warmth of the Douglas fir timber floors and birch ply walls. The effect is completed by exposed timber ceiling joists, which add a pleasing touch of complexity to the interior.

An unexpected building, it creates a delightful courtyard effect within the walled garden. The simple yet characterful interior creates an inviting and relaxing haven – connected to the main building but, at the same time, discreetly apart from it.

Project data

Start on site March 2024
Completion date July 2024
Gross internal floor area 24m2
Gross (internal + external) floor area 36.4m2
Form of contract or procurement route Traditional procurement
Construction cost Undisclosed
Architect Wilkinson King Architects
Client Private
Structural engineer Structure Haus
M&E Lamorbey Associates
Principal designer Wilkinson King
CDM Wilkinson King
Approved building inspector Integral BCS
Main contractor 3 Build Construction
CAD software used Vector Works, SketchUp, Illustrator

Sited at the end of the garden of a Grade II-listed semi-detached Victorian house in Stockwell, this small structure is built from a superstructure of timber studs, timber floor and roof joists, with timber linings and charred timber cladding.
