This approach allows the structure to be easily disassembled and repurposed for future events, significantly reducing waste and promoting a circular economy.

Importantly, all gallery walls and blocks are constructed using a cassette system, where walls are demounted and jointed together. After the fair, these walls are dismantled, stored, and reused across other events, with only paint and fabric tape to rejoin them for each new iteration. This reusability reinforces Frieze’s eco-conscious ethos.

The fair is illuminated primarily by translucent fabric roof skins, complemented by low-energy, high-CRI LED lighting, which enhances artwork visibility while minimising energy consumption. Additionally, the building’s lightweight kit components reduce energy use, transportation costs, and material waste, further supporting Frieze’s sustainable design objectives.

To enhance the fair’s atmosphere, an increased number of furniture clusters have been added throughout the space. In collaboration with the renowned Danish manufacturer Fredericia, the seating features Børge Mogensen’s classic backed bench model 3171, alongside a new low backless version developed exclusively for Frieze with Fredericia and the Mogensen estate. All pieces are crafted from oak and natural leather, arranged in social clusters between the galleries. Additionally, Maria Bruun’s Pioneer stools, linked with 3D-printed connectors, provide flexible seating options that can be easily dismantled, stacked, and reused for future editions of the fair.

Our goal with this project is to create something sharp and purposeful, as close as possible to the feeling of a permanent gallery, despite being a temporary structure. The design must support the infrastructure required by the fair, and by extension, the artists, while also moving large crowds through the space in a way that feels balanced, clear and easy to navigate. At the same time, we want to incorporate areas of discovery, contrast, and surprise. Being built in a park, the layout carefully wraps around to avoid disturbing any trees.

The structure itself is essentially a kit of components that we’ve committed to reusing and reconfiguring over several years. This not only informs our design decisions but also allows us to experiment, test, and refine the space year after year – sometimes in subtle ways, other times more dramatically.

Ultimately, we aim to achieve the quality and sophistication of a permanent installation while retaining the dynamic energy of a temporary one, all while serving as the backdrop for art.
Richard J McConkey, founder, A Studio Between

Client’s view

Our visitors this year will find the fair reimagined, with solo presentations and emerging artists front and centre, in a demonstration of Frieze’s commitment to the most exciting art being made today.
