The interesting quality of Victorian terraced houses is such that they can accommodate improvements and changes for the needs of different occupants. As part of this extensive renovation, we opened up the dark lower ground floor to help brighten the spaces and create a connection to the main ground-floor living areas. The new double-height void space created by inserting the full-width extension helps to flood natural light deep into the plan while connecting the two floors and the garden \u2013 once just glimpsed through a small kitchen window. The original veranda, accessed directly off the living room, inspired the internal Juliet balcony, which now frames views out to a lush garden.<\/p>\n
To make an intervention that looks seamless took time to resolve and carefully consider the integration of the major structural changes into the new and original fabric of the house. Opening up the ground floor required steelwork to span the weight of the main internal walls running up through the house. The steel fa\u00e7ade not only helps to give the project its character, it also helps take the load from the original walls above. Altogether, the steel plays a vital role in helping to reconfigure the plan and different levels while also giving the house a bold identity.<\/p>\n

The notion of stitching the new lightweight fa\u00e7ade in between two original outriggers of the neighbouring buildings reinforces the expression of a delicate steel structure slipping into the rear of the terrace. A sculpted set of brick steps ties into the new masonry that bookends the steel fins and seamlessly transitions into the garden.<\/p>\n
The quiet choice of the sustainable material palette works to brighten the rooms, bouncing light into them. In contrast to the calm surroundings of the walls and floors, timber joinery elements create focus and bring texture to give the interior an intimate quality which supports the activities of the home. Offering a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor living, the reimagined family house exemplifies the studio\u2019s ongoing commitment to creating thoughtful and ambitious spaces through sustainable means.
