Commissioned by the fourth generation of the Mart\u00ednez Zabala family, the AJ100-topping practice has refurbished existing facilities at the winery in addition to the extension.<\/p>\n

In line with one of Bodegas Faustino\u2019s central organisational pillars, sustainability has been integral to the project with a new visitor centre designed as a \u2018Planet 1.0\u2019 building.<\/p>\n

The 160-year-old Bodegas Faustino winery is in the middle of northern Spain\u2019s main winemaking region \u2013 Rioja – where the Mart\u00ednez Zabala family first started their wine business. Foster + Partners\u2019 design reinterprets the existing winery to create a stronger connection between its cellars and the surrounding vineyard.<\/p>\n

The main entrance has been relocated to the north of the site to create a new visitor experience, making the vineyard the first thing visitors encounter on their tour.<\/p>\n

A path then leads to the new visitor centre \u2013 the key move in the design. It has a vaulted and column-free hall to create a flexible volume, its roof inspired by the industrial heritage of the winery, reinterpreted as a lightweight structure made from timber arches.<\/p>\n

A anti-funicular profile enhances structural performance with minimal materials, while its earth colour allows the building to blend with the surrounding landscape.<\/p>\n

The visitor centre has an asymmetrical core to connect with the mezzanine above and create two distinctive zones at the lower level, each with a contrasting character. The upper level overlooks the entire visitor centre and vineyard landscape beyond.<\/p>\n

The new visitor centre has been designated a \u2018Planet 1.0\u2019 building. This means its carbon emissions can easily be absorbed by the earth. It also adopts an Energy Plus strategy led by the PVs on the roof producing more energy than required for building operations. This additional energy is diverted to the existing winery buildings.<\/p>\n

The building features large overhangs on all four sides to reduce solar heat gain. A central skylight and carefully integrated glazed facades bring natural light into the inside, reducing the need for artificial lighting.<\/p>\n

The new landscape features local species that enhance biodiversity and a discreet change in topography that is designed to protect the winery from the increasingly frequent heavy rainfall. This landscape has been designed around the site\u2019s existing facilities and in conjunction with the relocation of loading bays and control station.<\/p>\n

Under-utilised structures have been removed to allow for future growth in line with the client\u2019s desire to bring in new technologies into the winemaking process.<\/p>\n

Greenery has also been added to the fa\u00e7ades of the existing buildings to provide natural protection from the summer sun, further reducing energy consumption across the site.<\/p>\n

The practice unveiled plans for the Spanish winery extension in April 2023<\/a>. Fosters was chosen for the job by winery owner the Mart\u00ednez Zabala family, ahead of its 160-year anniversary. The practice previously worked with the family in 2009 on its Bodegas Portia in the Ribera del Duero region.<\/p>\n

Foster + Partners has also worked on\u00a0the Le D\u00f4me winery<\/a> in Bordeaux, France, and on controversial plans<\/a>\u00a0for a winery in Kent, UK which went to appeal last year.<\/p>\n

In 2022, the practice completed Omb\u00fa<\/a>, a mass timber retrofit of a Madrid warehouse to create more than 10,000m2<\/sup> of workspace, while being carbon-neutral in operation.<\/p>\n

Our valued relationship with the Mart\u00ednez Zabala Family stretches back to the last two decades, when we first worked together on their Bodegas Portia in 2010. The new project in Oy\u00f3n knits together the entire site with discreet, sustainable interventions to the existing buildings and landscape, and an entirely new visitor centre that provides a new social focus and image for the winery with an immersive experience for all.
