Despite both being qualified architects, we\u2019re keen to offer a broad introduction to the built environment either through live build projects or fictional briefs. We want to provide foundational knowledge and skills that can develop in different directions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is the aim of your organisation?<\/strong><br \/>\nPart of LSA\u2019s founding mission was to create alternative routes into architecture, particularly making architectural education more affordable and accessible. Both partners are hugely supportive of LSA\u2019s ambitions to improve diversity within the sector. Being able to take students on a tour of the RIBA\u2019s headquarters at Portland Place, taking part in the National Saturday Club\u2019s graduation ceremony and summer show at Somerset House are great aspects of the course that would not otherwise be possible!<\/p>\n<p>Our EPQ in Architecture is supported by the <a href=\"https:\/\/stephenlawrenceday.org\/\">Stephen Lawrence Day Foundation<\/a>, Rothschild &amp; Co\u2019s philanthropic foundation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rothschildandco.com\/en\/corporate-sustainability\/randco4generations\/\">R&amp;Co4Generations<\/a> and east London&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/future.london\/\">Foundation for Future London<\/a>. This year we have been able to expand to four programmes: Crafting Cities for year 7-9; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-lsa.org\/programmes\/part0\/unbuilding\/\">(Un)Building<\/a>; EPQ in Architecture for Year 12 students; and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gateshead.ac.uk\/planbee\/london\">PlanBEE:London<\/a>, a higher apprenticeship programme in Design, Construction and Management for 18+ in partnership with Gateshead College and Ryder Architecture.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What has been your landmark achievement?<\/strong><br \/>\nThe routes we have been able to open for our Part 0 students. This starts with a very hands-on recruitment process to ensure we are reaching as many young people as possible, not just those who know where to look and have the self-confidence to explore opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/buildings\/last-of-the-summer-wine-pavilion-round-up\">Dalston Pavilion<\/a> exemplified this approach to outreach. The content of the courses adjusts in response to the age of our students. For example, (Un)Building is a weekend course and incorporates a live build element, whereas our EPQ offers an introduction to higher education learning formats. All our programmes provide a multidisciplinary introduction to the built environment with a strong emphasis on craft and understanding how things are made.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What single biggest change would you like to see in the architecture industry?<\/strong><br \/>\nIt\u2019s important that salaries improve. Without this, encouraging more people into the industry from a wider spectrum of backgrounds, no matter the good intention, is not helpful.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What advice do you give your students who are thinking of pursuing a career in the built environment?<\/strong><br \/>\nBe curious and confident \u2013 easier said than done! We always encourage our students to ask questions and explore new courses. There is no harm in sending a cold email!
