Speaking at the National Building Specification (NBS) Construction Leaders\u2019 Summit last month, the chartered quantity surveyor said AI would help to make fire safety \u2018desk studies\u2019 more accurate \u2013 including improving stats on \u2018the predictive behaviour of combinations of products and materials\u2019.<\/p>\n

Morrell later told the AJ that AI could also \u2018start narrowing the decisions down for [architects] on some very high-level information\u2019, such as navigating a complex flowchart to choose a fire damper.<\/p>\n

But he said product-testing should fundamentally be the next key area of exploration for how AI can improve building safety.<\/p>\n

Morrell explained: \u2018If you go to the Building Research Establishment, they have a wind tunnel. It doesn\u2019t do any work anymore, because it\u2019s all done by computational fluid dynamics. And the main use of the wind tunnel they\u2019ve got is for testing algorithms, not testing products.<\/p>\n

\u2018We need to get to the same place. Scientists will tell you more it\u2019s complicated, they\u2019ll have the data. But the more complicated it is, the more variable it is, the more I wouldn\u2019t trust a single human being making the decision.\u2019<\/p>\n

During his speech, Morrell also addressed the \u2018wicked problem\u2019 of safety-certifying innovative construction products.<\/p>\n

The construction expert, who co-led the independent review<\/a> of the government\u2019s Construction Product Testing Regime from 2021-2023 alongside barrister Anneliese Day, said innovative products were the \u2018wicked problems\u2019 that they \u2018couldn’t crack\u2019 during the review.<\/p>\n

The review critically assessed the UK\u2019s existing system for testing and certifying construction products and gave feedback on how it could be strengthened to provide more confidence that the safety and performance of construction products aligned with their labelling.<\/p>\n

Morrell told the AJ that innovative products were a problem as \u2018we don’t really have a good system yet for testing individual products, those which are not regulated under a designated standard. And we need such a thing.\u2019<\/p>\n

He insisted that, until new legislation demands \u2018safety-critical\u2019 standards for new products, there should be \u2018a more rigorous process of account operated by voluntary testing houses\u2019, including risk analysis testing for products \u2018at a speed that keeps [them] coming to marketplace\u2019.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
