It is open until October 31 and is being conducted on behalf of the Ministry of Housing, Communities &amp; Local Government (MHCLG), by research and communications agency Verian.<\/p>\n<p>The AJ understands the MHCLG is looking to discover the perceptions of a cross-section of experts and business sectors through the quantitative survey. Topics covered will include views on local and national planning policy, the factors that influence decision-making in planning, and potential changes to national planning policy and guidance.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the opening of last week\u2019s AJ Retrofit Live conference (September 11), AJ editor Emily Booth urged architects and their industry peers to take part in the survey to help advance the retrofit-first movement. This month marks exactly five years since the launch of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/introducing-retrofirst-a-new-aj-campaign-championing-reuse-in-the-built-environment\">AJ RetroFirst campaign<\/a> for reuse of existing buildings, which was introduced in in the September 2019 edition of the magazine. The campaign aims to sharply reduce the industry\u2019s embodied carbon footprint through the widespread adoption of circular economy principles.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-593455\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.rt.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2020\/11\/09140321\/RetroFirst-Logos-2019-3-3-1600x409-300x77.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"77\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.rt.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2020\/11\/09140321\/RetroFirst-Logos-2019-3-3-1600x409-300x77.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.rt.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2020\/11\/09140321\/RetroFirst-Logos-2019-3-3-1600x409-230x59.jpg 230w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Booth said the campaign had \u2018played an important part in shifting the national conversation towards retrofit and reuse\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Indeed, the phrase \u201cretrofit-first\u201d is now commonplace within the built environment,\u2019 she added.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018RetroFirst is as much a mindset as anything else: the notion that it is far more sustainable to work with existing structures than demolish them and build new in their place. It is a call to pause and think, and create a more sustainable future.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Since we began our RetroFirst campaign, the AJ has committed to highlighting practices and projects that are driving change in retrofit and reuse. We\u2019ve championed forward-thinking clients and taken our positive environmental message to policymakers.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We\u2019ve helped to win over <a href=\"http:\/\/chrome-extension:\/\/efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj\/https:\/\/committees.parliament.uk\/publications\/22427\/documents\/165446\/default\/\">the Commons Environmental Audit Committee<\/a>, and have overseen thought-provoking initiatives \u2013 including our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.savebritainsheritage.org\/news\/item\/982\/SAVE-and-Architects-Journal-launch-ideas-competition-for-MS-Oxford-Street-site\">re:store ideas competition<\/a>, run in association with SAVE Britain\u2019s Heritage, which invited architects to consider how the landmark M&amp;S Oxford Street building could be refurbished and adapted.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Together, you can help accelerate a transition that is already well underway.
