It was purchased in 2020 and extended out at first floor level over the small rear terrace to create a second bedroom.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline_image fullsize image_size_full\" data-attachment=\"755676\">\n<p class=\"picture\"><span class=\"fullsize\" title=\"Show fullscreen\">\u00a0<\/span><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-755676\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.rt.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/09\/16145740\/02_fourtyfour_fardaa_%C2%A9Agnese-Sanvito.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The adaptations retained the fa\u00e7ade, flank walls, ground slab and joists. Externally, new slim-framed windows line the arches of the existing openings and the original blue of the fa\u00e7ade has been echoed in a lighter shade resembling the blue of Wedgewood Jasperware, paired with white details.<\/p>\n<p>Inside, the house is carefully designed using every inch of available space to provide comfortable spaces and ample storage, with in-built joinery elements.<\/p>\n<p>The ground floor is designed as a simple, textured box. Joinery lines the walls of the single main room, incorporating various shelving, a window seat, the stair and kitchen and windows opening out to the terrace. These fold away completely, creating a semi-outdoor dining space that can take advantage of afternoon and evening sun. Upper cupboard doors are faced with mirrors, expanding the sense of space.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"fullsize\" title=\"Show fullscreen\">\u00a0<\/span><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-755680\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.rt.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/09\/16145815\/08_fourtyfour_fardaa_%C2%A9E-Christina-Hancock.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Upstairs are two bedrooms and a bathroom, each with a skylight to provide further light and natural ventilation. Flooring is cork while a lime render is applied to walls and ceilings to provide a textured, sound-absorbent finish. Ceilings are boarded with wood-wool instead of plasterboard, and finished in rough lime plaster to match the walls.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline_image fullsize image_size_full\" data-attachment=\"755685\">\n<p class=\"picture\"><span class=\"fullsize\" title=\"Show fullscreen\">\u00a0<\/span><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-755685\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.rt.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/09\/16145858\/12_fourtyfour_fardaa_%C2%A9Agnese-Sanvito.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Bricks from the demolished rear wall were reused and supplemented with reclaimed London bricks, using lime mortar throughout. Cement is designed out where possible but, where it is required, is mixed with GGBS to reduce embodied carbon. The building is insulated, principally with cork, and thermally broken double-glazed windows were installed.<\/p>\n<p>An electric boiler replaced an old gas boiler with the gas supply disconnected to further reduce operational carbon. Internal walls are plastered with a lime-based rough render to provide vapour-permeable surfaces, coupled with the cork insulation and lime-bonded reclaimed brickwork.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline_image fullsize image_size_full\" data-attachment=\"755696\">\n<p class=\"picture\"><span class=\"fullsize\" title=\"Show fullscreen\">\u00a0<\/span><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-755696\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.rt.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/09\/16150029\/26_fourtyfour_fardaa_%C2%A9E-Christina-Hancock.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"factfile\">\n<h3>Architect\u2019s view<\/h3>\n<p>We felt it was important to honour the strange charisma that this accidental landmark radiates, that which drew us to the building in the first place. The interiors build on this character, with somewhat uncanny details and finishes blurring perception of space, proximity and surface.<\/p>\n<p>Although there was no statutory requirement to thermally upgrade the building, we felt there was an ethical imperative to do so.
