I have had to work at it. In the past it was not unusual to find me awkwardly sipping coffee in the corner of a room, pretending to deliberate over whether to choose a croissant or pain au raisin. In reality, I was wrestling with the discomfort of mingling among strangers, trying to work out whom I should approach and secretly hoping that someone would introduce themselves to me.

Over the years, my confidence has grown, though you might still catch me occasionally eyeing the breakfast pastries at events; if you do, feel free to come over and say hello.

The isolation and remote work trends enforced by Covid-19 have eroded our social skills. On countless occasions, I have heard it argued that networking isn’t necessary – ‘We let the work speak for itself’. But, while there’s truth in letting quality work stand on its own, it is folly to overlook the power of networking in person, rather than online, especially in a creative industry. Many of my career-defining moments began with a simple conversation at a party, event or dinner, whether formal or impromptu.

In creative industries like architecture, the risk of working in silos is substantial. Over time, studios become creative echo chambers. This detachment from fresh ideas fosters repetitive and uninspired design. The very lifeblood of progress and innovation is the sharing of ideas, disagreements, even arguments. The late, great Anthony Bourdain famously recommended having a drink with someone who disagrees with you as a way to broaden your thinking and horizons. In other words: if you want to innovate, get out of the echo chamber—and encourage all staff to do the same.

Smart practices don’t rest on their laurels; they actively seek growth through the exchange of ideas. Engaging with diverse minds helps architects and designers escape their silos, embracing a wealth of new concepts that ward off creative stagnation.

Recently, I returned from MIPIM, a conference often critiqued for its elitism and chauvinism. Despite these criticisms and past vows by many not to return, the turnout was as strong as ever. MIPIM exemplifies the essence of networking: it’s a melting pot of professionals from all corners of the globe and every sector of the built environment, sparking exchanges of ideas.

This year at MIPIM, I was able to exchange ideas with funders, developers, and architects from all over the globe. In three days I was challenged on my thoughts, challenged others, and gained new insights into the global housing crisis, formed a deeper understanding of international housing policies such as Germany’s rent control and laws against property vacancy. Learning about the 2.8 billion people living in inadequate housing conditions underscored the scale of these issues and the importance of global dialogue.

Networking also provides access to unadvertised opportunities and potential collaborations that might not surface through traditional channels. For example, a casual conversation with a fellow attendee led to a potential collaboration with a large USA-based architectural practice. The initial conversation came out of the blue over coffee and lasted less than 30 mins. I would not have had this conversation had I stayed in the office, in my silo.

In more casual settings, I’ve engaged with people whose paths I might never cross in the corporate circles of London. These informal interactions not only broaden our perspectives but also foster relationships that could lead to future collaborations. The power of a casual chat over a coffee or glass of rosé should not be underestimated—it could very well be the starting point of your next groundbreaking project.

The ways to network are as varied as the people who attend, be it through UKREiiF, networking clubs, or even the much-maligned breakfast club. What matters isn’t the forum you choose but that you do it and keep doing it. It’s a vital life skill, one that we must pass on to younger generations.

As we look towards solving the complex problems of today’s world, remember: no industry can innovate in isolation. Events like MIPIM are crucial, bringing together diverse voices and ideas that are essential for breaking the creative bubbles that limit us. Let’s not shy away from these opportunities.

Kunle Barker is a property expert, journalist and broadcaster

I’ve always believed in the power of networking, although it hasn’t always come easy to me.
