The exterior of this four-storey, 5,700m2<\/sup> building features a five-bay steel entrance portico on its southern fa\u00e7ade, while along its eastern fa\u00e7ade at fourth floor level there runs a continuous terrace offering views out to newly landscaped grounds and pond. A green roof helps reduce solar heat gain and accommodates photovoltaics.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\"\"<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The building\u2019s interior features a variety of flexible spaces, open layouts and communal areas reflecting a strong focus on collaboration and engagement between researchers and professionals from different disciplines. These spaces include accommodation for teaching, research, administration and special events, and are organised around an informal central stair and atrium.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\"\"<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Hub, a double-height gathering space, is designed to host large lectures or presentations and provides an informal space for eating, socialising or working. At ground level a \u2018corporate commons\u2019 provides space for the school\u2019s corporate partners to work with students and faculty, promoting closer collaborative links between the school and industry.<\/p>\n

In keeping with the university\u2019s 2030 sustainability goals, the building uses LED lighting and an HVAC system, while all the offices have operable windows for natural ventilation.<\/p>\n

The new school is part of a wider masterplan designed to improve connectivity across University of Virginia\u2019s campus, with its portico together with the brick used on its elevations designed to reference the original early-19th century campus buildings, including Thomas Jefferson\u2019s 1826 Rotunda.<\/p>\n

As such the new building provides a link between the University\u2019s historic grounds \u2013 a UNESCO World Heritage Site \u2013 and an entirely new district which is being developed and will also include a hotel, conference centre and performing arts centre.<\/p>\n

Architect\u2019s view<\/h3>\n

It has been a privilege to work at the University of Virginia, home of Thomas Jefferson\u2019s\u00a0‘Academical Village\u2019, and to design a building that embodies his belief in discussion, collaboration and enlightenment.<\/p>\n

Working closely with the University and the Data Science Team, we have created a building inspired by UVA’s architectural heritage, but one which also exploits the possibilities inherent with contemporary construction. The result is an open, flexible building that will stimulate learning and the exchange of ideas for future generations.
