And what about food? An explosion in maritime food production could help us shift towards greater food security and self-sufficiency.

The coastal edges of the country, in some of the most stunning settings, are some of the most deprived. The housing crisis is felt acutely in our seaside communities and it’s encouraging to see practices such as IF_DO helping to transform vacant buildings into vibrant social hubs and affordable housing.

Radical rethinking of structures such as Hastings’ Observer Building can come about from close partnership with a community-led developer, in this case Hastings Commons. This is careful, long-life/loose-fit retrofit work, done in phases, and it is part of a network of once derelict and now revitalised spaces that speak to the social, economic and cultural benefits of community-led restoration.

We know the seaside nourishes the soul – but there’s productive power there, too.
