These must be completely independent of the student’s office and have at least three-years’ recent experience tutoring design in a school of architecture and ‘ideally be an architect registered in the country where the student is working’.

But he added: ‘What makes this case extraordinary is the description of the tutor and the salary. The former is positively Edwardian and the latter is so large that I feel that the offer is such that I would call in Sherlock Holmes before advising any son or daughter of mine to take up the post.’

Marsha Ramroop, former director of inclusion at RIBA and author of Building Inclusion, also commenting before the advert was taken down, advised anyone considering applying to look into the job carefully, but to ‘go for it’ if the fit seems right.

She explained: ‘This is a huge salary, and the response from most people will range somewhere between “Is this a joke?” to “Wow! What an opportunity!”

‘What I believe passionately is that architecture offers a myriad of opportunities and anyone who feels it’s for them, after checking into it carefully, should go for it.’

Adam Caller, founder and director at Tutors International, told the AJ the person funding the role is not a relative of the student, but a ‘philanthropic billionaire’ who knows the student through his private life, and identified her ‘precocious talent’ when she was ‘only five or six’.

Responding to the wording and requirements listed in the advert, Caller told the AJ: ‘I’m not going to say it’s My Fair Lady level of social adjustments. But if this person is going to really be able to command the room, 25 years from now, as a professional architect, she’s got rather a lot of social skills to learn.’

He said safeguarding and compatibility were both important considerations for Tutors International when outlining the expected lifestyle of the appropriate candidate.

‘People are allowed to choose how they spend their money,’ said Caller, who added: ‘It’s a wonderful offer. Who wouldn’t want this for their child going to university?’

‘The RIBA should be using its power to level the playing field – not promoting private tutoring’

Nabiha Qadir, a recent student and current architectural and urban designer at ZCD Architects, comments

Architecture school is already so expensive as it is, and to be recognised as an architect in this country, you have to pay for five years of education (excluding Part 3) at an institution recognised by the RIBA/ARB to gain that accreditation/recognition. By doing so, the RIBA establishes the profession as one that only certain people can afford.

Using their platform to promote private tutors tips the scale even further. Is it not enough that many students already can’t afford the bare minimum amount of education needed to be an architect, without RIBA encouraging extra private tutoring for their peers on the same course who can afford it?

What’s more, the RIBA is the body which determines teaching standards in accredited universities – but if they are promoting private tutoring for a student who has offers from four really good architecture schools, then aren’t they contradicting their whole assessment for standards of education?

Personally, I have never been able to afford Architecture school without having to work part time jobs at the same time. The standard of work required paying for constant printing for pin ups, laser cutting slots, modelling materials, licenses for computer software, portfolio sleeves, stationery – and the costs of these add up astronomically.

Those from a lower economic background who might have to work part time to afford architecture school are already at an academic disadvantage to their course mates, as they simply can’t put 100 per cent of their time into their degrees. If they are also marked against students who can afford extra support and private tutoring, how is that fair?

The RIBA and ARB hold great power over how universities teach, how architects work. They maintain standards to which teaching is upheld. With this power, the least they could do is use their influence and platform to level the playing field, by sourcing money for more bursaries for disadvantaged students, providing support, and at the very least not using their platform to promote private tutoring.

The vacancy, which appeared on the institute’s online jobs board, RIBA Jobs, sought an ‘excellent’ young architect to provide year-round academic mentorship to a ‘young lady’ for an annual wage of £288,000.
