Perkins&Will designed 150 Holborn to be the UK HQ of Sidara Collaborative, and shares the building with other design and engineering-focused firms also under the company’s umbrella, including Portland Design, Currie & Brown and Introba.

It’s not hard to see why Perkins&Will names 150 Holborn among its proudest achievements of 2023. Featuring an impressive central atrium, sculptural staircase and rooftop pavilion with panoramic views over London, the project, they say, puts ‘cross-disciplinary collaboration at its core’ – rather like the firm itself. The open studio has transformed cross-pollination between Sidara’s multidisciplinary firms, ‘pulling a really wide suite of skills together’, insists Perkins&Will’s managing director Jo Wright, who became the first female director of the London studio when she joined in January 2023.

Meanwhile, the building’s high-performing, daylight-optimising envelope and low-carbon, circular economy-led interior are testament to an environmental approach which saw Perkins&Will shortlisted in the AJ100 Sustainability Initiative of the Year category.

Other impressive sustainability-led projects in the practice’s 2023 repertoire include a circular project for legal client Squire Patton Boggs – Perkins&Will designed a temporary fit-out for the company’s short-lease space, creating a ‘material bank’ of components, which the architects later re-worked into the client’s new permanent building. Also in east London, the practice completed a ‘post-Covid workplace’ for tech consultancy Cognizant Worldwide, using an innovative system of circular-economy deconstructable ‘Co-lab’ spaces. Perkins&Will attributes its unwavering commitment to circularity to its 12-strong sustainability taskforce (two full-time, 10 part-time), its chief sustainability officer Jason F McLennan, and its ‘Living Design’ framework. Living Design was developed in 2022 as a ‘holistic approach to sustainability,’ explains Wright, and has since become the firm’s USP, maxing out the environmental remit of each project with measurable ‘key project objectives’ developed closely with clients.

‘In its simplest form it’s a checklist. [But] critically, it’s an architecturally-focused checklist,’ says Wright, who adds that Perkins&Will is unafraid to push clients ‘as far as they’re willing to go’ on sustainability.

150 Holborn, Perkins&Will’s new London home

Source:Timothy Soar

‘It becomes embedded in everything that we do from the outset,’ explains senior associate Christopher Christophi, who says the ‘clear and ‘consistent’ system is particularly helpful when collaborating with the US offices.

Perkins&Will employs 138 permanent architectural staff in the UK (out of a global total of 1,924), a number which Wright says has remained ‘more or less static’ over the past year. Of those employees, 37 per cent are from diverse ethnic backgrounds and 48 per cent are female, putting the practice leaps ahead on diversity and inclusion.

The practice’s Justice, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) council underpins its action here, driven by a belief that ‘inclusion spurs creativity, and innovation,’ explains Parisa Kanabar, a recently-qualified architect at the firm.

Project work boomed in 2023, despite major challenges such as material cost inflation and an ‘exodus’ of staff back to EU countries post-Brexit.

Perkins&Will’s high-profile completions included UCL CAVE, a built environments testing facility for University College London, which can provide test conditions at temperatures varying between –5 and +40 degrees Celsius.

The firm’s schedule continues to be packed into 2024, with current work on two Dublin-based office projects for TikTok, a new Unilever HQ in Kingston upon Thames, and a high-end fit out for a finance company in Mayfair.

In the pipeline, it has two new hospital projects lined up under the New Hospital Programme, a stream of higher education work with at least one high-profile project Wright ‘believes’ is in the bag, and a ‘growing’ volume of work in science and healthcare, thanks to its in-house specialists with ‘deep expertise’ in those sectors.

Looking ahead, the managing director’s dream for Perkins&Will is to develop the same ‘extraordinary’ brand it boasts in the States, encompassing the practice’s focus on social infrastructure and multidisciplinary services.

The relocation points to a bold new era for the UK arm of the global practice, which was founded in Chicago in 1935 before spreading its wings across the USA, Canada, Europe, Asia and the UK.
