The project transforms an unused retail space into a comfortable dwelling, while establishing a strengthened relationship to its historic commercial setting and exploring interactions with the life of the street.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Central to the project is an adjustable timber shopfront fa\u00e7ade, allowing the occupants to determine degrees of privacy and connection, depending on the time of day, the day of the week or activity within.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Internally \u2013 and visible from the street \u2013 the previous \u2018shop floor\u2019 is reconceived as a space to be worked in during the day and lived in outside of office hours. Measuring 1970 x 970mm, each screen was created by laminating small individually hand-cut glass shapes to a continuous pane of toughened glass.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Emerging from discussions about the craftsmanship of traditional leaded glass, this new method is a beautiful invention of the glassmaker. A piece of bespoke fabrication, it combines fresh hardwood joinery, reworked salvaged woodwork, patterned glass screens and paint.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">The lattice of mullions, transoms, vents and sashes was fabricated in hardwood, primed in the workshop and hand-painted in situ with an exterior satin paint by Dulux called Sundrenched Saffron 1.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">The decision to create an imperfect finish, characterised by its brush marks, was made with the intention that occupants will be able to approach future maintenance and redecoration without expert tools, skills, and attendant costs. With no loss of the intended character, the signage can be painted over, the shop renamed, colours changed, and damage touched up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Above this new hardwood joinery, the signage board is constructed with regular planks machined down from larger reclaimed boards.
