Costa\u2019s Barbers is a high street shop in Battersea, remade as a home and office for the architects, Thom Brisco and Pandora Loran. The project transforms an unused retail space into a comfortable dwelling, while establishing a strengthened relationship to its historic commercial setting and exploring interactions with the life of the street.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Central to the project is an adjustable timber shopfront fa\u00e7ade, allowing the occupants to determine degrees of privacy and connection, depending on the time of day, the day of the week or activity within.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Internally \u2013 and visible from the street \u2013 the previous \u2018shop floor\u2019 is reconceived as a space to be worked in during the day and lived in outside of office hours. The kitchen, at the centre of the plan, marks the limit of potential public access and can function as a counter in support of commercial activity.<\/p>\n

Beyond, private spaces for washing and sleeping are characterised by a decrease in scale, with bedrooms set almost a metre above ground, due to a risk of flooding.<\/p>\n

To the rear, and in contrast to the public front, a private fa\u00e7ade combining triple-glazed windows, rendered insulation and pebbles gathered from the banks of the Thames addresses the shared yard.

Architect\u2019s choices<\/b><\/h3>\n

Unique among the shopfront\u2019s range of adjustable parts is a pair of translucent sliding screens, set with glass artworks made by Jack Brindley of Edinburgh-based Pavilion Pavilion. Measuring 1970 x 970mm, each screen was created by laminating small individually hand-cut glass shapes to a continuous pane of toughened glass.<\/span><\/p>\n

Emerging from discussions about the craftsmanship of traditional leaded glass, this new method is a beautiful invention of the glassmaker. With the lead removed, and with such fine tessellation, the glass lights the interior with an ethereal, crystalline quality.

Specification<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n

Fundamental to the balanced relationship of high street life and the domestic interior is the traditionally constructed jettied timber shopfront. A piece of bespoke fabrication, it combines fresh hardwood joinery, reworked salvaged woodwork, patterned glass screens and paint.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The lattice of mullions, transoms, vents and sashes was fabricated in hardwood, primed in the workshop and hand-painted in situ with an exterior satin paint by Dulux called Sundrenched Saffron 1.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The decision to create an imperfect finish, characterised by its brush marks, was made with the intention that occupants will be able to approach future maintenance and redecoration without expert tools, skills, and attendant costs. With no loss of the intended character, the signage can be painted over, the shop renamed, colours changed, and damage touched up.<\/span><\/p>\n

Above this new hardwood joinery, the signage board is constructed with regular planks machined down from larger reclaimed boards. Over this assembly sits the box of a hand-cranked awning, supported by an irregular timber corbel that was created by quartering a set of salvaged snooker table legs along their long axis.
