{"id":741261,"date":"2024-05-17T11:12:01","date_gmt":"2024-05-17T10:12:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/?p=741261"},"modified":"2024-05-17T14:35:41","modified_gmt":"2024-05-17T13:35:41","slug":"put-children-at-the-centre-of-new-housing-design-aj100-practices-told","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/put-children-at-the-centre-of-new-housing-design-aj100-practices-told","title":{"rendered":"Put children at the centre of new housing design, AJ100 practices told"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"post_first_paragraph\">Speaking at the Lighterman in King\u2019s Cross on Thursday (16 May) \u2013 the final lunch club of the 2023\/24 AJ100 season \u2013 Bornat made the case for including young people and primary caregivers in housing delivery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"post_first_paragraph\">Bornat, who in January gave evidence to a parliamentary inquiry on children and young people in the built environment, told the room that if you add just one parent or caregiver to every child in the UK, this makes up 35 per cent of the population, yet this huge group is virtually ignored in the design process. This means spaces for interactive play aren&#8217;t thought about properly and are typically placed far from doorsteps where parents can keep a watchful eye while getting on with things.<\/p>\n<div class=\"content-wrap\">\n<div id=\"wrapper_sleeve\" class=\"content-inner-wrap full-width\">\n<div class=\"content container\">\n<article class=\"post-listing post-714421 post type-post status-publish format-standard has-post-thumbnail hentry category-news tag-aj100-lunch tag-demolition tag-reuse tag-sustainability editorial-aj100-club editorial-homepage-news editorial-news editorial-retrofirst editorial-retrofit editorial-sustainable-building\">\n<div class=\"post-inner\">\n<p class=\"entry\">\u2018[Young people] really care about the built environment [but they are] pretty overlooked in planning terms because most of them do not vote, don\u2019t have a car, or a house,\u2019 said Bornat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"entry\">She continued: \u2018They are not always available to come to community engagement exercises, so they\u2019re not going to exercise their voice properly and so we have an undemocratic planning system.\u2018[Therefore] we haven\u2019t really got much of an idea about what their needs are, and that needs to change.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"entry\">Calling for a democratic shake-up of the planning system and housing delivery in England, the ZCD director stressed the importance of consulting and involving young people early on.
